It all depends on where you are in your life, what your goals are, etc.
For me, what's important are those things that are intangible. You know, good friends, a sense of family or tribe, a sense of direction, appreciation for the little things that makes life enjoyable. Oh, and knowing and appreciating my talents.
All other things stem from that. Safety is important, and so is risk-taking; I make sure I have enough of both to be happy. The happiness of those I love is important, because it makes me happy. And so on.
having just cleared out at least six years of CRAP from my parent's garage, i have a thought or two about this. what's important to me right now is maintaining peace of mind and equally peace of space. if i can maintain my brain and simultaneously maintain my room it gives me space to work with, room to breathe, clarity, room for good things in the all of the above category. peace of mind and peace of space are currently, and have been historically, the hardest things for me to pull off. maybe it's an absurd obstavle, but it's one of the ones that has done me in every time, and therefore, is important in many senses of the word.
i could also tell you to go read or re-read zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance because it's fresh in my head and says a great many things on subjects within this realm.
while sifting through old junk, i also found that letters from other people, photographs, and finger puppets were thigns that i always saved. you can make of that what you will.
Healthy relationships are of great importants to me. ^_^
But before that, comes living space, and the knowledge that I won't lose it the next month. Once that is no longer the biggest priority, then relationships for me. ^_^
After that? My goals. The things I put my energy into. Going to Ireland is one of them. Eventually owning a motorcycle is another. Having children and owning a house is another one for me.
Other things? Music is important to me. Can't work well w/o it. Reading is important. Retaining my sense of wonder is hugely, hugely important. As is keeping my imagination up to par.
Keeping my body image positive is important. ^_^
Maintaining relationships, family, lovers and friends, is important...
Knowing that whatever I do, it's because it was the best choice at that time is important. A life with limited to no regrets.
