We're off to see some movies!

Up
It's a treat no matter what to see a Pixar movie. This time around Pixar served up something different again. One on end, it's very fantastical and mad cap, on the other end a lot of the gags are somewhat predictable, slap stick.

In certain ways, it seemed to push towards more mature topics. Hints at miscarriage/infertility, death, divorce are all there but not flaunted. Of course adults understand these subtle hints and while some kids may not completely understand, they won't feel lost.

On the other hand, there's times when the slap stick violence seemed to push towards too mature, though Pixar always managed to cut short before something actually bad happens. The dogs falling into a deep ravine, and coming back just wet; the dogs jumping into fighter pilots, that shot darts; the fighter pilot dogs being shot down and poof their parachutes open. I have no problem kids watching mature and even violent content, but for some reason every time this happened, it took me out of the film and made me think "wtf? really?" My best guess at why it unsettled me was the half-committed to each. In an old Bugs Bunny cartoon, if Wiley Coyote fell off a cliff, he came back squished and bruised and seeing stars. Sure he didn't die but at least he got a bit dirty in the process... you can't have it both ways I suppose.

All in all, it's a good one. It may not be up there with Wall E but still brought a tear to my eye and made me laugh.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Visually this was really interesting. I wonder though if this wasn't a true story would I have found it as interesting. In fact, I think it would have been much better had I seen this in the theatre. This type of movie, slow and plodding, visually stimulating, a movie to roll over me, it's great if I sit down and let it stew. But when I'm at home and the Internet is calling, clothes need to be folded and a room to be cleaned, I can't help but only give half my attention to the film.
