Poker Night

It was the last hand of the night and Xander had moved beyond frustrated and into weary acceptance. He had lost, completely and utterly lost. Not that it was his fault though. When Spike had suggested a poker night he hadn’t mentioned that he planned on cheating so much that sometimes Xander wasn’t even sure they were playing the same game. And he knew Spike had cards up his sleeve, but how he was hiding cards in that tight black t-shirt he always wore was beyond Xander. He knew Spike was cheating, that was practically a give in, but without proof he had nothing to keep Spike from taking the pot again and again.

When he wasn’t watching Spike, he was eyeing Drusilla, who was also cheating, albeit in a very different manner. It was no accident that Xander was sitting with his back to the dresser, upon which sat Miss Edith, who had an excellent view of Xander’s cards. Earlier in the day Drusilla had put Miss Edith in time out, and he was sure that the stupid doll was trying to get back into Dru’s good graces by telling her his cards.

Yes, Xander knew how that sounded. But you can only spend so much time around Drusilla without starting to think of Miss Edith as a real person.

So, forgive the pun, but the deck was stacked against Xander from the get go, and Spike and Drusilla took him for all he had. Thankfully he‘d had the foresight to insist on playing with candy instead of money, or else food would have been in scarce supply that week. They’d hauled out the leftover bags of skittles from Halloween and used them instead.

Now it was the last hand, Xander had exactly 10 skittles left to his name, Spike had a large pile in front of him, and Drusilla had a sizable pile of her own. It was the last hand not because after Xander lost (which he would) he would have no more skittles at all, but mostly because Drusilla seemed to be bored with the game now, and was quietly humming to herself as she shredded her cards into tiny pieces. Note to self, buy new deck of cards.

The wisdom of gambling with candy now seemed suspect, as Xander eyed the two multi-colored piles of pure sugar that sat in front of each vampire. Spike had already started snacking on his, and Xander knew from previous experience (an incident with gummy bears and strawberry sauce which shall never be spoken of again) that sugar seemed to have the same effect on vampires as it did on three year olds. In that they bounced off the walls and went crazy until crashing and falling asleep wherever they landed.

Xander watched Drusilla’s hands stop ripping apart the cards as she reached out to take a skittle. After putting it in her mouth and chewing on it for a moment, she seemed to decide that she liked it, and proceeded to not only taste, but devour the rainbow in record time. She was done by the time Spike took Xander’s last ten skittles. As Spike started in on his own winnings Xander sighed, it was going to be a long night.
