Word Count: 500 exactly!
Spike lay on top of Xander on the couch, his head lying on Xander’s chest and his legs nestled in between Xander’s knees. He could hear and feel Xander’s steady heartbeat under his head, the slight raise of his chest with each thump, during that more pronounced rise and fall of each breath. His breathing was a steady rhythm, as Xander had fallen asleep some time ago. Spike had put the movie they were watching on mute in favor of simply enjoying this calm, peaceful moment. He watched the characters on the screen, the faces and expressions that flickered by. The pictures without sound or plot left him a bit bemused, but Xander needed his sleep and noise would wake him without fail. These quiet moments were rare in the lives of the Scoobies and should be treasured.
He shifted his head and nuzzled his face into Xander’s chest, breathing in his scent. It was hard to believe sometimes, how unbelievably content he was. He’d had love before, Drusilla, and his brief infatuation with Buffy. Both had been love, real and strong, but neither of them felt as good as his love for Xander; his life with Xander.
He’d loved Drusilla with a violent and unconditional passion; she was his Sire, his reason for unlife. However her madness made reciprocation unpredictable. Sometimes she had been loving and attentive, others times she had been dismissive, or worse, outright cruel. He’d never blamed her, he lay the responsibility for his Dark Princess’ entirely at the feet of Angelus. It still hurt though. When things were good between them it had been the most amazing thing, they could have conquered the world, but when things were bad, they were the worst times he’d ever had. His time with Drusilla had filled him with more insecurities and fears of abandonment than anyone should have.
He’d loved Buffy, briefly, before he’d come to his senses and realized that she would never be able to love him back. Not even in the mad way of his sire. That realization had hurt him badly, but an unexpected friend had helped him through it. Now he realized that falling in love with Buffy was just a necessary step to find what he had with Xander.
Because the day to day life with Xander was better than anything he’d had before. From the coffee in the morning, to the daily phone call from Xander when he was at work, to the Scooby meetings and demon fighting, to falling asleep in front of the tv. It was all good, all perfect.
Xander muttered incomprehensibly in his sleep and shifted a bit, his sock clad feet wiggling against Spike’s. Spike just smiled against Xander’s chest. Soon he would have to get up and carry Xander to bed; his back would hurt in the morning if he spent all night on the couch. Hopefully he’d manage it without waking him up. For now, though, he was just going to enjoy this moment.
