Read Sarah Waters' The Night Watch over the weekend. I had really enjoyed her earlier books set in the late 19th century and it may have been partly the change of chronological scene which made me not take to this novel quite as well. Another factor I think was that it was focused around 4 different characters so there was never that feeling of intimacy and claustrophobia that made her other books so compelling for me. The characters individually were not that memorable. On the other hand I did keep reading all the way through without getting bored and I am quite capable of throwing books aside unfinished if they do not grip me. Sometimes though I find I read books or watch films tenaciously trying to get to the point and have a rather cheated feeling when the book ends and I feel the heart of things has been withheld from me. Still I suppose in fiction like life you can't expect all mysteries to be laid out for one.
I am so glad it is my last week in this job. I have had worse jobs by far but the sheer ennui is killing me. Also the texture of the files is rough and makes wierd shivers go up and down my arms and into my teeth.
