the 68th annual Golden Globes

Jan 16, 2011 13:17

Since tonight the Golden Globes will be airing, and since I'm obsessed with award shows, I decided to make some predictions on who/what I think will win as well as who/what I would like to win. Here goes!

updated: now including winners + comments.
*[what I think will win = underlined & what I want to win = italicized & bold = winner]

BEST PICTURE (DRAMA)
  • Black Swan
  • The Fighter
  • Inception
  • The King’s Speech
  • The Social Network

I was absolutely torn by which film I wanted to win. In the end, though, I'm happy with the winner. It was pretty obvious that The Social Network would win, either that of The King's Speech.

BEST PICTURE (COMEDY/MUSICAL)
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Burlesque
  • The Kids Are All Right
  • Red
  • The Tourist

I was so happy with this! The rest of the nominees are awful for the most part, and I abhor the entire category if we're being honest. (I mean, come on! If the film was good enough, it would've been a contender for best picture in general - no categories!) But The Kids Are All Right was brilliant and I'm so glad it won.

BEST ACTOR (DRAMA)
  • Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network
  • Colin Firth, The King’s Speech
  • James Franco, 127 Hours
  • Ryan Gosling, Blue Valentine
  • Mark Wahlberg, The Fighter

I knew it! Colin Firth is one of my favourite actors, and although I haven't seen this film yet the scenes I've seen him in are absolutely stunning. He deserves it!

BEST ACTRESS (COMEDY/MUSICAL)
  • Annette Bening, The Kids are All Right
  • Anne Hathaway, Love and Other Drugs
  • Angelina Jolie, The Tourist
  • Julianne Moore, The Kids are All Right
  • Emma Stone, Easy A

I loved Emma in Easy A, but honestly Annette Bening is amazing and she completely deserved it.

BEST ACTOR (COMEDY/MUSICAL)
  • Johnny Depp, Alice in Wonderland
  • Johnny Depp, The Tourist
  • Paul Giamatti, Barney’s Version
  • Jake Gyllenhaal, Love and Other Drugs
  • Kevin Spacey, Casino Jack

I hadn't seen the film Paul was in, but I love him so I was like, why not? I honestly didn't expect anything out of this category since I - once again - dislike the whole 'comedy/musical' thing.

BEST ACTRESS (DRAMA)
  • Halle Berry, Frankie and Alice
  • Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole
  • Jennifer Lawrence, Winter’s Bone
  • Natalie Portman, Black Swan
  • Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine

This one wasn't very shocking. If she hadn't won, now that would have been a tragedy. SHE WAS BRILLIANT, absolutely mind-blowing in that film. I can't get over it. So glad she won!

SUPPORTING ACTOR
  • Christian Bale, The Fighter
  • Michael Douglas, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
  • Andrew Garfield, The Social Network
  • Jeremy Renner, The Town
  • Geoffrey Rush, The King’s Speech

A little shocked and disappointed with this one. I wanted everyone except Michael to win because they all deserved it (sorry, Michael but everyone know its was a pity nominee). But I adore Chrisitan Bale, so I'm happy with it. I really thought Geoffrey Rush would have gone home with this one since that film is so well-reviewed. Jeremy was my favourite part about The Town, he was great. And oh, Andrew! It was a tough category, little Bambi, and if this was a perfect world you would win all the awards.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
  • Amy Adams, The Fighter
  • Helena Bonham Carter, The King’s Speech
  • Mila Kunis, Black Swan
  • Melissa Leo, The Fighter
  • Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom

II figured, why not? The film actually does look good, so yippee. I love Helena, though.

DIRECTOR
  • Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
  • David Fincher, The Social Network
  • Tom Hooper, The King’s Speech
  • Christopher Nolan, Inception
  • David O. Russell, The Fighter

I was a bit unsure about who would take this one home, since both Darren and David did such amazing jobs. Happy that David won, though. The direction of that film was gorgeous, but I still wish it would have gone to Darren.

ANIMATED FILM
  • Despicable Me
  • How to Train Your Dragon
  • The Illusionist
  • Tangled
  • Toy Story 3

No surprise here, but happy it won.

SCREENPLAY
  • Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy, 127 Hours
  • Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg, The Kids Are All Right
  • Christopher Nolan, Inception
  • David Seidler, The King’s Speech
  • Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network

HELL YES. Totally deserved it. The screenplay was one of the best - if not the best, aside from Andrew of course - parts of the film.

FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM
  • Biutiful
  • The Concert
  • The Edge
  • I am Love
  • In a Better World

This one was up in the air for me, so kudos to the winner anyhow.

ORIGINAL SCORE
  • Alexandre Desplat, The King’s Speech
  • Danny Elfman, Alice in Wonderland
  • A.R. Rahmann, 127 Hours
  • Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, The Social Network
  • Hans Zimmer, Inception

YES. I was so happy about this! I loved the music in this film, so stunning.

ORIGINAL SONG
  • “Bound to You” from Burlesque
  • “Coming Home” from Country Strong
  • “I See the Light” from Tangled
  • “There’s a Place for Us” from The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
  • “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” from Burlesque

I would've thought for sure tat they'd go for the cartoon, but whatever. I haven't seen any of these, nor do I especially want to (except maybe Country Strong, but purely for Leighton & Garrett), so whatever. And I do love Cher, so, okay.

PRIMETIME TELEVISION NOMINEES

BEST TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA
  • “Boardwalk Empire”
  • “Dexter”
  • “The Good Wife”
  • “Mad Men”
  • “The Walking Dead”

HOW COULD MAD MEN NOT HAVE WON? I love Boardwalk Empire, I do - but Mad Men is the best show on television! I just can't believe it didn't win, ugh. And last season was so amazing, too!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA
  • Julianna Margulies, “The Good Wife”
  • Elisabeth Moss, “Mad Men”
  • Piper Perabo, “Covert Affairs”
  • Katey Sagal, “Sons of Anarchy”
  • Kyra Sedgwick, “The Closer”

I feel like Kyra wins almost every year, so I was like, okay. But I would have loved for Elisabeth Moss to win! Better yet, why wasn't Christina Hendricks nominated? That woman is perfection in every way. I am happy for Katey Sagal, though.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA
  • Steve Buscemi, “Boardwalk Empire”
  • Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad”
  • Michael C. Hall, “Dexter”
  • Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”
  • Hugh Laurie, “House”

I just knew he would win! I've only seen the show a few times, and it's amazing, but my heart still belongs to Breaking Bad. I am happy he won, though, because I do love him.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES - COMEDY OR MUSICAL
  • “30 Rock”
  • “The Big Bang Theory”
  • “The Big C”
  • “Glee”
  • “Modern Family”
  • “Nurse Jackie”

Oh fuck Glee. I was actually kind of pissed about this. I mean, I love the show - a lot. But this season has been awful, and compared to the other nominees? Just no.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES -COMEDY OR MUSICAL
  • Toni Collette, “United States of Tara”
  • Edie Falco, “Nurse Jackie”
  • Tina Fey, “30 Rock”
  • Laura Linney, “The Big C”
  • Lea Michele, “Glee”

I was a little unsure about this, since I only watch 30 Rock and Glee, but I would have loved for Tina to win. She's hilarious!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES - COMEDY OR MUSICAL
  • Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock”
  • Steve Carell, “The Office”
  • Thomas Jane, “Hung”
  • Matthew Morrison, “Glee”
  • Jim Parsons, “The Big Bang Theory”

I honestly thought that Steve would get it since he's amazing and it's his last season, but I'm so glad that Jim won! He is fantastic and is an amazing actor/comedian.

BEST MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
  • “Carlos”
  • “The Pacific”
  • “Pillars of the Earth”
  • “Temple Grandin”
  • “You Don’t Know Jack”

I've only seen The Pacific, so I wasn't quite sure what else to guess, aha. But after seeing some clips from Carlos, I absolutely have to watch it!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
  • Hayley Atwell, “Pillars of the Earth”
  • Claire Danes, “Temple Grandin”
  • Judi Dench, “Return to Cranford”
  • Romola Garai, “Emma”
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt, “The Client List”

I had heard Claire Danes was great in that, but I didn't know if she could compare to Judi Dench.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
  • Idris Elba, “Luther”
  • Ian McShane, “Pillars of the Earth”
  • Al Pacino, “You Don’t Know Jack”
  • Dennis Quaid, “The Special Relationship”
  • Edgar Ramirez, “Carlos”

It's Al Pacino, come one. I haven't seen any of these - only clips, actually - but I love Al a lot. So, yay.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
  • Hope Davis, “The Special Relationship”
  • Jane Lynch, “Glee”
  • Kelly MacDonald, “Boardwalk Empire”
  • Julia Stiles, “Dexter”
  • Sofia Vergara, “Modern Family”

FUCK YEAH. If anyone else had won, there would have been a riot. Because she deserves it and so much more.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
  • Scott Caan, “Hawaii Five-O”
  • Chris Colfer, “Glee”
  • Chris Noth, “The Good Wife”
  • Eric Stonestreet, “Modern Family”
  • David Strathairn, “Temple Grandin”
I went ballistic at this part, not even kidding! I was actually a little taken aback (not as much as him, obviously - he looked completly stunned!). Not because he didn't deserve it - because he so obviously did - I just thought he might be overlooked. I'm so incredibly happy for him!

Correct Predictions: 13/25.

[Sidenote: congratulations to Robert De Niro, one of my all-time favourite actors, for being awarded the Cecil B. Demille Award.]

There was nothing that really shocked me this year, or made me rage - at least not a lot, there were a few moments. But overall, I was content with the awards this year, probably because so many deserving people were given awards and there were so many brilliant people and films and shows nominated.

Now I have to wait until the Oscars, which will be quite difficult.
