We're off!
The first assignments have been made and we're off. My book (or perhaps I should say, my first book) is Pluck the Bud and Destroy the Offspring by Kenzaburo Oe. My local library doesn't have anything by that title but a quick stop at Wikipedia confirmed that Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids is another name for the same book. This seems to me an interesting contrast in style which obviously is a result of translation. Is it ever possible for a non-native speaker(reader) to resolve the issue of which translation is "closer to the original?" (Answer: probably not, viz. Le Ton Beau de Marot, Douglas R. Hofstadter, 1998).
It is my good fortune to get a book that I have not only never read (not too surprising since my odds are 865 out of 1001 for that) but that I have never even heard of the book or the author. This qualifies as a book which I would not have read except for the books1001 project. I've put a hold on it and it should come in to my local branch by Wednesday at the latest.
