I gotta stop doing that

Had my first day of work at Einstein Bros. today. The assistant manager sat me down to do orientation.

After approximately 5 minutes of talking and explaining things to me, the conversation.....wandered.

Her: "I feel like... things were EASIER back before, you know? When the women took care of the house, and the men were the breadwinners. All this *whisper* bullshit! *unwhisper* about 2-income households and crap.... people don't need that really, they just want the fancy cars and gigantic plasma tvs. What do you think?"

Me: "I'm...inclined to agree with you, things are too complicated nowadays, everyone wants their toys."

Her: "I KNOW! I mean I think I could live just fine spending every day taking care of my family, you know? I think men should learn how to be MEN again, and women should accept that they have an important role to fill that's not any LESS than a man's, but DIFFERENT. You think so?"

Me: "I...er... yeah, I think I get where you're coming from."

Her: "Yeah. Fat chance of finding anyone like THAT anymore......how did we start talking about this?"

Soooooo don't know how that happened. We were going over policies, she mentioned that senior staff couldn't date lower-ranked colleagues [that's how the former GM got fired, for sleeping with a girl who works there....still works there. It's also the same way an assistant manager got fired.....same girl. She's maybe 20 and has a 3 y/o kid...not going there], then for some reason mentioned that HER relationship had gone down the tubes, and I guess she was venting....but what an interesting thing to vent, and how....interesting that it should be to me. Those that know me know why that's so funny.

At any rate, job is nice. No, job is great. I shouldn't say so as soon into it as I am, but my first day was wonderful. Not knowing the sandwiches and such yet, I was basically being shown around when she got a phonecall that she had to take. So I grabbed a broom and started sweeping....moved tables to get under them... found the prep table was filthy, started cleaning....moved to the next table...

The store's really in terrible shape. They got an "A" in cleanliness for their last inspection but I suspect it's because the floor's SO dirty that it looks like patterning in the floor. Don't y'all go avoiding my restaurant now, the FOOD is fine. Food prep, food storage, all that's clean. It's just that they have grime in the corners of the floors, REALLY bad baseboards, and crumbs and shit all over the lids of their various containers. The employees all wash their hands regularly and all the temperatures are alright [though they keep freezing the cucumbers] but other than that it's fine.

Oh, there's also cockroach bait/traps under the shelves in the back - but again, I don't see that as bad, because in all honesty the alternative is NO cockroach bait/traps and I think that would be very bad. Anyway I've made it my goal to turn this store around, so I'm going to try my best at that. Men's restroom baseboards are halfway done [I need a chisel for that crap], that table shines now, and the floors in the back are almost back to a flat grey color, rather than grey streaked with black areas left and right. It's definitely better than the host job, and it looks like I'll be getting lots of hours. Score!

Well, off to bed early. Downside to job: Gotta sleep early. Upside: Out by 6 PM at laaaaate late latest, if closing takes us way too long. I think this is the first time ever I'm going to get overtime pay! Woohoo! Goodnight y'all!
