Dear reader,
In case you were wondering what happened after I rode off. . .
I’ve followed my letters from Quijonbu to Mill Valley. For real this time. Because the war is over.
When I brought the motorcycle to the airport, I was told it would have to stay in Korea. I was a little saddened. But, I had one at home, so Peg would have killed me if I had two. And besides, I was going home to my girls; I didn’t need that yellow bike anymore. I left the sign behind too.
The flight to Korea had seemed so short. The flight home felt so much longer.
I stepped off the plane and the airport was mobbed. I stood on my tiptoes trying to see Peg. I wandered through the crowd, anxiety fighting with excitement for my dominant emotion. I felt a hand on my shoulder, and turned around.
“BJ?”
And there before me, gaping like she didn’t think I was real, was my wife.
“Oh my - Peg. My Peg.”
And we stood there for a moment, her hand resting on my shoulder and my hands cupping her cheeks. I don’t know which of us began crying first.
“You’re home, you’re safe,” she said.
I leaned down to kiss her. I kept kissing her as long as I could.
“You need a haircut,” she said, running a hand through my hair. “And please shave that mustache.”
I could only smile because there she was clucking like an old housewife, and it was wonderful because she was my wife.
“I love you Peg,” I said, and pulled her into a hug, burying my face into her hair. I held her amidst the busy airport.
“Welcome home,” she said, looking up at me.
I kissed her again.
“Can I see Erin now?” I asked.
Peg nodded. “She’s at the house with our parents. I didn’t think she’d like waiting here.”
“It takes four people to watch her?” I asked, smiling.
“No,” Peg said with a small laugh. “Our parents just thought that we might want some time alone; that I might want to be the first to welcome you home.”
“They were right,” I said.
I kissed her one more time then grabbed her hand as we walked to the baggage claim.

“We’re home!” Peg called as we walked into the foyer.
My mother came in from the family room carrying a toddler.
“Erin!” I said. “Mom!”
“Daddy!” Erin looked at Peg.
“Yes, that’s Daddy,” Peg said with a laugh.
“Daddy!”
Mom handed me Erin.
“It’s good to have you back BJ,” Mom said, giving me a hug and kissing my cheek. “I’ll give you three some privacy.”
Mom went back to the family room.
“How are you sweetie?” I asked.
“I love you Daddy,” she said and kissed my cheek.
“I love you too angel,” I said, crying again. “I missed you so much.”
Peg wrapped one arm around my waist and smoothed Erin’s hair with the other hand. She rested her head on my shoulder.
“She’s so big,” I said.
I felt Peg nod against my arm.
“I missed so much.”
Peg took Erin from me.
“Sweetie, can you go play with your grandparents and Waggle? Mommy and Daddy will be there in a minute.”
“Okay.”
I watched Erin toddle into the family room.
“BJ darling, you’re here now, that’s what counts. And, Dr. Hunnicutt, I would like you to know I do not plan on sleeping alone again for a very long time.”
I smiled.
“I think I can take care of that, Mrs. Hunnicutt,” I said, before kissing her again.
We walked into the family room and for the first time in my life, I was going to play with my daughter. I sat with her on the floor and petted Waggle. Peg sat near us.
I had been concerned that Erin would be judgmental of my skills as a parent after being so used to Peg’s. However the ease with which she played with me removed all my insecurities. She was my little girl and I was her daddy.

“I’m thinking it’s time to start thinking about dinner,” Peg said.
“I’ll take everyone out,” I offered.
“Actually,” Peg said, looking shy, “I want to cook. It’s your first day back, and I want to cook for my husband.”
I smiled and pulled her into a hug. Peg let out a screech as I knocked her off balance.
“Mommy,” Erin said, lifting a little finger to her lips. “Shh!”
I laughed before leaning in close to Erin.
“Hey, wanna know a secret?” I whispered.
“'huh,” she said, nodding enthusiastically.
I tickled her, causing her to shriek and giggle.
“Welcome home,” Peg said, and kissed my cheek.
“So BJ,” Peg’s dad said. “What’s it like to be home?”
“Wonderful, sir. I’ve never felt safer.”
“We’re glad your home. Especially since it’s the first time Peg’s truly looked happy since you left.”
“Dad!” she reprimanded.
“What? You’re my baby girl. I like seeing you happy.”
“All he said was that BJ makes you happy,” Peg’s mother interjected. “He’s your husband, he should.”
“She makes me happy too,” I said. “Both my girls do.”
I patted Peg’s knee. Peg blushed lightly as she stood up.
“I’m going to go start dinner.”
“I should shower and change.”
“You all don’t mind watching Erin, do you?” Peg asked.
“Of course not sweetheart. She’s our grandbaby,” my mom said.
“And darling, you’ll shave right?”
I opened my mouth to argue, but Peg interrupted.
“I’m sorry. I don’t want to quarrel.”
“Is it that bad?” I asked.
Peg scrunched her face in distaste.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
My dad walked with me to the bedroom.
“Your mother and I have been getting to know Peg, and I just wanted to let you know, you did well. I also wanted to let you know you have a wonderful child.”
“Thanks Dad. I learned from the best in how to pick out the perfect woman.”
I kissed his cheek.

After my shower and shave, I changed into fresh clothes I hadn’t taken to Korea. I headed to the kitchen, where I walked up behind Peg who was at the stove stirring a pot of something. I kissed her neck, causing her to jump.
“You shaved, thank you,” she said, facing me. The way she said it made it sound like she was indebted to me.
“You’re welcome,” I said, kissing her.
I pushed some hair behind her ear. She smiled before turning back to the stove.
“Errol Flynn will no longer be cleaning the gutters, right?”
Peg looked at me like I was crazy.
“Not as long as you do them.”
I walked over to the counter where Peg had sliced a red pepper.
“Nothing happened between you too, right?”
I bit into the strip, not moving my eyes from the cutting board.
“Happen? No.”
She walked over to me and grabbed my shoulders.
“I love you BJ Hunnicutt, and no one else.”
“You’re an angel,” I said, kissing her. “I love you too.”

I put Erin to bed that night, reading her favorite story. She gave me a big kiss.
“Tank you Daddy.”
I stood up to leave when her little hand touched my arm.
“No go. Daddy sleep.”
I smiled before lying beside her. I waited until she fell asleep before I went to my room. Peg sat on the edge of our bed.
“Sorry, Erin didn’t want to fall asleep without me.”
“I can’t blame her. That seems to be a popular trait amongst the Hunnicutt women.”
“I’d be more than happy to assist you with that,” I said, walking over to her.
I lowered her to the bed as we kissed.

I laid on my back, Peg’s head on my chest, her arm and leg draped over me.
“Will you tell me about it?”
“About what?”
“The war.”
I thought a moment before replying, “If you really want to know, then yes. But not right now.”
“Daddy!” Erin screeched.
“I’d better go get that,” I said, and got of bed. I pulled on my pajamas and blue robe. “You might want to get dressed in case she wants to sleep with us.”
Perhaps part of me wanted her to want to sleep with us. I poked my head into Erin’s room.
“Daddy!” she cried, holding her arms out to me.
“Hey Erin baby,” I said, sitting on her bed and taking her into my lap. “What’s wrong sweetie?”
“Bad dream.”
“It’ll be okay. Daddy’s here now. Would you like to sleep with me and Mommy?”
“Yes.”
I carried Erin to our room.
“We’ve got one more,” I said.
I placed Erin in bed, took off my robe, turned off the light, and climbed in.
“I love you Erin,” I whispered, kissing her head.
“I love you too darling,” I said to Peg.
I ran my fingers along Peg’s cheek. She grabbed my hand and kissed it.
“I love you too BJ.”
And we all fell asleep, finally reunited, all exactly where we belonged.
Goodbye, farewell and amen,
Captain Dr. BJ Hunnicutt
