Hawkeye walked up to the bar, a slight swagger in his gait. His goal was a pretty brunette.
“My name’s Hawkeye, what’s yours?”
“Hawkeye, what kind of name is that?” she asked.
“My real name is Cap. . .Dr. Benjamin Pierce.”
“Were you going to say captain? Were you in the army?”
“Yes, in Korea. It was a long time ago.”
Out of the corner of his eye, Hawkeye saw a man with big feet. When he looked at the man’s face, all he noticed was the cheesy mustache.
“Hawkeye?” she asked.
“Yes?”
“What will you have?”
Hawkeye noticed the bartender looking at him.
“Oh, uh, a martini.
“So, you never did tell me your name. Are you going to continue being the mysterious stranger?”
“Mm-hmm,” she said, sipping her Rum & Coke.
Hawkeye picked up his glass, but didn’t take a drink. All he did was smell it.
“What’s her name?” she asked.
“Who’s name?”
“Whoever you’re thinking about?”
“Oh her. It’s not a her, it’s a him.”
“Oh. . .”
“No no no,” Hawkeye said, waving hand. “Not like that. It’s my best friend. I haven’t seen him since the war ended.”
“Then you should go see him.”
“I can’t. He lives in California. Besides, he probably doesn’t even remember me. He’s probably settled back into his regular life with his wife and kid.”
But in the back of Hawkeye’s mind was, “I'll see you back in the States, I promise. But just in case, I left you a note.”
