Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities:
His main power is his supersonic speed in which he can actually run past the speed of sound (although it is unsure what his top speed is). Because of his speed, he also has superhuman reflexes/agility and has high durability since running at high speeds don't seem to bother him (this is just something he probably has gained because of his superspeed so it's not exactly a separate power). He also has the ability to generate hyper-kinetic vibrations, accelerating molecules in matter. This can cause solid objects that he directs these towards to explode or actually vibrate fast enough to go through solid objects like walls. He can also have other people with him go through walls.
History/Personality/Appearance
Character History:
Tommy is from the Marvel Earth 616 universe which is the primary universe. Earth is pretty much modern with perhaps slightly more advanced technology then our modern world as we can see by Ironman's suit. Also the fact that superpowers exist along with things like aliens and other abilities and races that aren't normal to our Earth. overall, though, it's like the world we know it minus the cool stuff.
Tommy was born to Frank and Mary Shepherd and is presumed to be the only child. The parents are divorced and he was raised in Springfield, New Jersey for his life before meeting the Young Avengers. It's later revealed that he and Billy, his twin brother (except not really?), are the reincarnation of the twins of the Scarlet Witch and Vision.
When the Young Avengers found Tommy, he was kept in an advanced technological facility that was keeping him detained and actually experimenting on him with the goals of making him a living weapon. He was there supposedly under court order for "accidentally" destroying his school by either vaporizing/exploding it. The Young Avengers (at this time it is Eli, Kate, Cassie, Billy, Teddy, and a new Vision who later goes by the name Jonas) help him escape and he teams up with them for the time being. When they first meet him, they find that he looks almost if not identical to Billy, other then for small things like hair/eye/skin color. He also had many similar looking attributes to Pietro (Quicksilver).
It isn't until the mini Skrull invasion/attack that the Young Avengers become official and he becomes an official teammate with the name Speed.
During the Civil War, there was a split between those who registered and those who didn't. Most of the Young Avengers stayed with Captain America as an unregistered hero, except for Cassie who registered and worked with Ironman (Tony Stark). Tommy was on the side of those who did not become part of the registered initiative.
During the Civil War, the Young Avengers had a run in with the Runaways, He did not have a huge part in most of this, although he became very friendly with Molly Hayes that they became good friends.
After the Civil War, Billy and him, now knowing more about their connection with the Scarlet Witch, go on a quest to search for her. They look in places that her magic signature is strongest or where she was most likely to be found. Their search ends up in failure. Although while in their search, they run into Master Pandemonium in a former residence that the Scarlet Witch and Vision had stayed. After sending Tommy to Hell for a little while, Pandemonium brings Tommy back, recognizing the two as Wanda's children. He tells them a much more detailed history concerning them with Mephisto. He urges them that the history with the Scarlet Witch is dark and they should just embrace what they have now. They call off their search, content with what they have for now.
Later he goes on a date with Kate after her humiliating defeat against Clint Barton (the previous Hawkeye). He helps reclaim her bow (and in a way, her codename) and also shares a kiss with her. She breaks it off with him and pursues Patriot (Eli) instead though.
[Between Young Avengers Presents and Avengers: Children's Crusade, Tommy is either not major in the story or what happened was not important to character development/history.]
At the beginning of Avengers: CC, Billy loses control of his powers and puts a group of terrorists in comatose. Billy of course leaves, refusing to cooperate with the Avengers. He later relents when Captain America actually approaches his parents about what happened. Instead of staying though, the Young Avengers bust Billy (and Teddy, who refuses to leave Billy alone) out. Tommy comes in and has them vibrate through the wall, where we learn that he can go through solid objects. They meet Magneto, who is their supposed grandfather based on that they are Wanda's children. A fight between the Avengers plus Wolverine and the Young Avengers plus Magneto commence. It ends when Billy teleports the Young Avengers and Magneto back to where Wanda was born, in Wundagore. They arrive at Magda's (wife of Magneto) grave where he explains a little back history about Wanda and Pietro. Billy uses his powers to look for Wanda's magic signature before Tommy goes running off when Billy mentions that it's there.
He runs into Quicksilver (Pietro) whilst doing so, although he isn't too happy to see Magneto or any of them. Pietro grabs Billy and runs off with Tommy chasing after them. A large stake that Pietro throws hits a Doombot that looks just like Wanda where they find out that Wanda is with Dr. Doom.
They stay at an inn or some home of some kind during the night where they wake up to find that Billy had left already. When they storm the castle, a battle between Doom and the Avengers break out. They are able to locate Billy (who's lost his powers for the time being) and Wanda (who has no recollection of her previous life and has no idea she was the Scarlet Witch). When Wolverine attempts to kill them, IronLad (who was the one to bring the original Young Avengers together but left before Tommy came in) arrives.
Later while Doom is trying to kill Billy, Magneto comes in to stop him while Billy and Wanda escape. They meet up with the rest of the Young Avengers and IronLad and go back in time. They arrive at the Avengers Mansion and meet Cassie's dad, Antman. But the reunion is cut short when they run into the Jack of Hearts. An explosion happens but when they get over their disorientation, they find themselves back in the present. However, Cassie's dad is still with them. Wanda was the one to bring them back and also remembers who she is.

Character Personality:
Tommy is an interesting teen. It's hard to tell what he's really like, although one can only assume the true Tommy Shepherd is no longer visible. Being tested to become a living weapon must have affected the sixteen year old quite a bit. He talks about nothing about his past from his divorced parents to his testing while detained. He has a very independent nature, probably due to the detainment and testing where it must have been pushed into his mind to always stay strong.
He's arrogant and loud a lot of the time. Probably the most arrogant of the entire team. He gloats about the smallest things that makes him just a little superior even if it doesn't actually. He likes to rush into things without really thinking or waiting. His moral code is much lower then the others, being a bit of a delinquent, although he does follow the Young Avengers code. He doesn't care much about causing damage and will actually destroy and cause a lot of property damage. He isn't afraid of violence and isn't afraid to cause violence either as he had made Skrulls partially explode during an invasion. His reasoning was that it didn't kill them. He also isn't beneath stealing or other illegal things as he went clubbing with one of his teammates (both of whom are 16) and broke into a place to reclaim her bow even though it's still considered stealing.
However, there are obvious signs that Tommy wants to be a hero and part of the team. Tommy tends to be the least cared for team member and often turned into the third wheel. But he's strong part of the team also.
He does show visible excitement towards being part of the Avengers, especially becoming giddy when they first join the newly rebuilt Avengers Mansion. He also sticks to the team and follows their code, although he might have a little thing towards explosions and causing them. But nevertheless, he doesn't kill and he follows to an extent, which shows his loyalty at the very least.
He hates being ignored, and it's obvious. He'll clearly mention about information never apparently reaching him. And he tends to voice out things like whether he's fine or not when everyone else is worried about each other but doesn't seem to make sure he's okay. This also may lead to him being a bit of a tease and always teasing his companions, although a large part of that is probably just because Tommy wants to bother them. As rude and obnoxious he may be, even with his teasing, he doesn't usually mean to actually hurt whoever he's teasing. He does sometimes say things that are better left unsaid and he might actually mean some of what he says, but the fact he sticks around shows that he does actually care regardless of all his childish banter.
He hates going slow. Everything has to be fast paced for him to like things because moving at normal speed is just hard for him to do. He tries, but usually ends up speeding off anyways because of his natural need to be active. Which also makes him very chatty. He does love to talk and he probably enjoys to hear himself talk. But he enjoys when people actually listen to him because he knows he's significant in their lives.
In the end, Tommy is still another teenager who wants to make a difference and be important to them (he grows very attached to the fact that Magneto said he was his favorite grandson of the two after all) with a bit of an attitude.
