i'm learning, i'm growing.

either i don't retain memories of pain out of pain (it's painful, forget it), or feeble-mindedness (what's pain?), but i don't recall pain like this before.

my aforementioned trip to the dentist status post half my molar cracked away occurred yesterday, and after an x-ray showed the roots of the tooth were viable, he elected to save it/them and work up a root canal/post/crown for a repair scheme. i reckoned that would be okay, and we proceeded. i've had some work like that done before without much incident, and held out hopes to still be up for attending a get-together with my bff for his 40th b-day.

by 2 p.m. (1400 for utforsker), the novocaine began wearing off in earnest, and i could start to feel some achiness. by 5, (1700), i thought it safe to try to eat something, starting with something reasonably soft - soggy cold cereal. (pizza of any breed and cold cereal are my go-to foods.) i took a normal bite at some point (didn't need to, but out of habit), and felt a stab of pain in the area where the work was done. "won't do that again." i thought.

considered options for later eating, having gone out to the store earlier in the afternoon and picked up chicken products (-kiev, -with wild and brown rice, -cordon bleu), and salisbury steak patties, thinking i could add them to the impending diet of soup and soft foods i anticipated for the coming week's lunches. remember the pain, feel dejected. sit and think. finally i remember that scrambled eggs, and most any kind of eggs, are soft, and full of protein. dig out the potato patties as well, microwave them so they'll be soft, and have dinner. despite careful eating with only the right side of my mouth, pain still building.

take one more vicodin before dropping and curse myself for using them during the earlier part of the week (that wasn't pain!) and try to sleep. wake up around 2:30 (0230) with throbbing pain, likely because of rolling onto my left side at some point. take another vicodin, extra strength tylenol, and 3 more ibuprofen. top it off with ora-jel for good measure. manage to drop back to sleep.

wake at 7:30, jaw throbbing, neck ache. count out another round of pills, start coffee, feed the dog, hope for the best.

if it feels this way at the end of today, i'm calling in to the dentist for a prescription or, better, a return visit sooner than next saturday to get this fixed. i think one of the roots that should have been deadened didn't take, or something. i don't think what's happening now is supposed to, and i've had 3 other root canals. oh well.

pain, teeth, health
