Books Read This Year

Aug 04, 2007 12:12

Okay, so I'm going to keep this post up, and edit it as I finish reading books. 50bookchallenge gave me the idea, but they have like, 150 posts per day, and it's too much for my flist and patience, so I'll keep the list here.

Most of what I read is fantasy, but expect to see Sci-fi and such as well. Rarely historical stuff, except for the Belisarius series, which is marvelous, and deserves to be read. And I never read romance-only books. Well, unless it's the last thing I can read. x.x

Anyway, on to the books. My goal is 60, but I usually read more than that per year. Lots more. I'll just see how it goes.

#41 is good. Stories in it are kinda short, but they're fun.

#40 rocks. Very good, nice and long and fun.

#38 and #39 are fun :) It's basically published fanfiction. *grin* Some of the stories are very good, too.

#37 is more of a short story collection than a novel. They're all connected, and still about the heroes of the V&H universe, AND the last story is something of a conclusion, so I guess that's alright. Now I'm not sure what I should read next, altough I'm thinking of starting the Valdemar universe from the start and go through all the books.

#35 continues the story that starts in #34. Very nice read. :) Very, very nice. Unfortunately, I didn't have V&H 3 at home, or I'd have read that as well. Gotta get it now.

#34. Female heroes, the way I like fantasy. Unfortunately, Mrs. Lackey seems to like having her heroes go through abuse before the end. Often it's several times. *sigh* Still, good read. Will read V&H2 and 3 tonight, most likely. 2 definitely.

No number given for #33, because it's a preqeul of the other three. There are another two books, but I've read one of them a while back, and I'm not that interested in them. Also, there are books that follow the HoV, but it might be a while before I start on them. The Valdemar books are interesting, tho. Very much so.

#32 is... good. A bit too much political intrigue in it, but good. Also a bit too much angst for my tastes, but the sort of book that touches you. Very good read :) Also draws a close to Talia's tale, which starts in HoV 1. Now to see what HoV 4 is about. :D

#30 and #31 are really good reads. And they have a female hero, which I love in fantasy. *grin* Now I'm reading Heralds of Valdemar #3, and will probably get done with 4 tonight as well. Or DH, if the ruddy thing works. >.>

#29 is cool. :) Not the sappy romance type, and there were no huge arguments that made them break up and get together again. :D I can't say how much I hate that. Very nice read.

*sigh* I hate "modern" fantasy. Period. WTF is up in the author's head? Apparently, they think that by being really weird and writing crap, they can be considered "artists". Well, poo on them.

Oh. Many people have said that Mercedes Lackey's fantasy books aren't that great. Some of them are rather cliche or hard to swallow, and the likes. But she has a true gift for writing children. Like in Ship #3 and her Serrated Edge series... and the Urban Elves, to a point ^_^ Good stuff in those books. Very, very good stuff.

Chris - leave a comment if you have questions about the books, but be aware of spoilers - and make sure you warn if you have spoilers in your comments.
