Maureen stood on the second level of the mall, looking down at all the people milling below her. She felt a hand on her back, turned her head and smiled. “Hey,” she grinned.
“Hey yourself, what are you doing?” Mimi asked.
“Waiting on Joanne, she’s down there somewhere,” Maureen told her. Mimi nodded and watched all the people below them.
“Are you waiting on Roger?” Maureen asked her.
“Yes he said if I was a really good girl, he’d tell Santa what I wanted,” Mimi laughed.
“Yeah I was told the same thing,” Maureen grinned.
“Why does that happen? Why do we get treated so young?” Mimi asked.
“Well you actually are young, me I just never grew up, it’s not all that bad though is it? I mean you like it a little don’t you?” Maureen prodded.
Mimi bit her bottom lip and Maureen giggled, hugging her. “It’s okay, secret’s safe with me,” she said. Mimi returned the hug and the two went back to staring. “So what interesting things have you found?” Mimi asked.
“I saw some little kid dressed as a cow before,” Maureen told her.
“No you didn’t,” Mimi said in disbelief.
“No, seriously, I did. Some little boy I think, he was yelling to his mother about wanting to go see Santa or something like that.”
“Dressed as a cow?” Mimi asked.
“Not a real cow, some jacket type thing with white and black patches and he had on these tan jeans,” Maureen explained. “Oooh look, there he goes!” she said pointing him out in the crowd.
Mimi smiled and the two went back to quiet crowd gazing. Maureen turned and looked at Mimi. “You’re thinking,” she told her. “Want to tell me about it?”
“I was thinking about jumping,” Mimi said and Maureen became startled quickly.
“No, no, not like that, it just looks like fun,” Mimi told her. “It would be really cool ya know, to get up on this banister and jump, to fly, over all these people, defy gravity, so to speak.”
Maureen grinned. “Defy gravity huh? I’ll try and put it and you in my next protest, rig you up to a harness, write you a song, how’s that?” Maureen asked.
“I like it,” Mimi grinned.
An hour later the two were still crowd gazing. “They are taking far too long,” Mimi said grabbing Maureen’s wrist and looking at her watch.
“Come with me,” Maureen said not giving Mimi a chance to respond and dragging her off.
“Roger is going to kill me,” Mimi sighed.
“Yeah, Joanne will yell too, it doesn’t matter,” Maureen said.
The two got in the very short line and decided to get their picture with Santa. “I can’t believe I let you talk me into this,” Mimi said pouting.
“Would you just hush,” Maureen said as she pushed Mimi up a bit.
Now they were at the front of the line. The person dressed as an elf had been there all day and he looked so unhappy and when he set his eyes on the two big kids in front of him, he sighed. "Merry Christmas, Now sit and tell Santa what he's gonna have to stand in line for this year" the elf grumbled.
Maureen and Mimi both kissed the elf’s cheek. “Smile dude, it’s Christmas,” Mimi told him and then she and Maureen flounced off to sit on Santa’s lap.
Once the picture was taken, the girls got two copies and went back to their spot by the railing, where a note was taped. Mimi picked it up and read. “Mimi, ran into Joanne, we needed a few more things, I’m assuming you and Maureen ran off, please don’t leave here again, we’ll be back at four thirty, Roger,” Mimi said.
“Gives us an hour,” Maureen told her.
“I’m really tired of watching the crowd,” Mimi said.
Maureen thought a moment, borrowed a pen from the store across the way and sat down next to Mimi. “Come on, we’re going to write and then sing a beautiful song,” she said.
