WASHINGTON, DC - Around a dozen members of the Spectrum Human Rights group held a silent protest in solidarity with the LGBT community in Russia in front of the White House Sunday afternoon.
The event marked the end of the seventh annual “Week Against Homophobia” in Russia, and there were companion protests held across Russian Federation earlier Sunday including the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Participants stood with their mouths taped to express their silent protest against the denial of the human rights and dignity of Russian LGBT people by the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin, while holding up signs affirming solidarity with the greater LGBTQ community inside the country.
Spectrum spokesperson Viacheslav Revin said; LGBT people in Russia suffer from homophobia every day. The world has forgotten about them after the Olympics, but they continue to live under the same key problems as before.
What has changed is that the dictatorship of Putin grows. Putin used the rhetoric of Hitler when he annexed Crimea. In his eyes, enemies of the State are Jews and LGBT. It happened before- it should not happen again. LGBT people in Russia today are as the Jews in the Soviet Union were. It is very necessary to allow them to leave the country where they are at risk every day.”
The “Week Against Homophobia” is an informational campaign to raise awareness about homophobia and its danger to the entire Russian society.
