Where No Cow Has Gone Before

It took me over a year to watch every episode of Futurama (one of the three of you still reading please comment on that poor lonely entry!), and, well, now that I have been focusing more on writing, I have less time to mainline television shows!

So when I decided to watch Star Trek: The Next Generation, I decided that I would do an abridged ( Read more... )

Yep, this is my first time, and I have gotten past the first two seasons quickly because this is a good list!

I'm excited but must warn you that the entirety of season one is horrible.

ETA. Sorry, failed to read a crucial sentence. I love Data too.

Incorrect! "Datalore" was really good! Loooooooore. But, yes, season two was already better than season one, which was a little too TOS-y.

Oh, you're right! That one was good.

Brent Spiner is a fantastic actor, and gets many more chances to shine later on. The other positive of watching season one is that you meet the criminally underused Tasha Yar.

Yeah, I was really impressed with Spiner there, and Yar had potential.

Is this when I acknowledge that the only reason I started watching Star Trek: TNG was because I thought Wil Wheaton was cute? Dude it was syndicated, it took effort to find on the dial and I did it because of Ensign Crusher.

I feel like I went to confession.

I didn't talk about Wesley at all in my pimping post but we can talk about him over here now that I'm done!

I was going to warn you that the first three entries on that list (and the sixth) are pretty awful, but I guess you already know that. ;-)

TNG has some fantastic episodes, but it also has some truly epic stinkers, especially in seasons 1 & 2. You actually got to skip the worst of them, some of which have truly outrageous levels of sexism without the excuse of it being the '60s. I'm not sure why anyone would recommend "The Naked Now" for a short list of episodes, however... quite literally the only thing of any importance to happen in that episode is that Data and Yar boned.

And that fact becomes relevant in "The Measure of a Man," so I am glad I watched it! Also, I enjoyed "The Naked Time," so of course I wanted to watch the callback episode.

While I don't think it ever gets mentioned out loud again in the series, there are some later instances where I think you can see the memory of Tasha influencing Data in his interactions with... certain guest stars.

If you're curious about some of the famously awful episodes you were spared from having to see, SFDebris' Star Trek reviews can provide the highlights, and are extremely entertaining besides.
