Brent Spiner is a fantastic actor, and gets many more chances to shine later on. The other positive of watching season one is that you meet the criminally underused Tasha Yar.

TNG has some fantastic episodes, but it also has some truly epic stinkers, especially in seasons 1 & 2. You actually got to skip the worst of them, some of which have truly outrageous levels of sexism without the excuse of it being the '60s. I'm not sure why anyone would recommend "The Naked Now" for a short list of episodes, however... quite literally the only thing of any importance to happen in that episode is that Data and Yar boned.
