Countess the Title II

I have not breathed a word about this to anyone for fear of jinxing it, but it has been in the works for months, wrapped in red tape as an inevitable gift for me...

I just got my very first promotion! I have leveled up from Drug Safety Associate to Drug Safety Associate II. And the accompanying raise is more substantial than I expected.

This promotion is long overdue, and I've wanted it for almost a year, but I totally deserve it because I've come a long way from this guy, who didn't know what the hell he was doing. Now I have meetings and perform database reconciliations!

Knowing that nothing will ever make my parents proud of me, I had considered not telling them and only mentioning it if the subject ever came up in the future, but I decided that was childish and inappropriate. So I called my mom and told her the good news. She congratulated me and asked what it meant (salary-wise). I told her what I made now, and she said, "Oh, that's not bad!"

And then she asked if I could now get my PhD, I think asking if my company would pay for it. I told her that I was fine, and she asked if it wouldn't be better if I had a PhD, and I said, sure, but it would use up my life.

She kept pushing, and I said, "Can you please just focus on the good and stop criticizing my life?"

She didn't think she was criticizing my life. All she said was that I could get a PhD now.

"You're criticizing my personal choices," I said. "And I know you're upset I never finished it."

Thankfully, she backed up and said, "Congratulations." I told her I had to get back to work.

I went out to lunch with my co-workers, and my boss sent a company-wide e-mail announcing my promotion that garnered a flurry of congratulatory e-mails, some of them from people I didn't even know.

I am slightly intimidated by my boss's boss's boss's request to meet with me to discuss my "new responsibilities," but I suppose I'm a real professional now. Making the big bucks! Now I can totally buy more things from my comic book store.
