The speaker at lunch had a really interesting talk. She spoke about telemedicine...by using ROBOTS IN HOSPITALS. The robots were essentially mobile monitors with webcams, but they allowed experienced doctors to examine and interact with patients all across the state. It was a really cool program. Some of the hospitals hilariously dressed up the robot in a lab coat and stethoscope.

There have been a bunch of news reports about this kind of technology in Canada, which has been tried in remote communities in the North. It's allowed places that don't have doctors, to have medical access without driving 4 or 5 hours. I think there has been some work on telasurgery as well. It seems to have a lot of promise.

I really enjoy reading about these conferences. You make it very easy to picture how they run and so on, and it's so much fun to read about different careers.
