The Bloodletting of Sarah Marshall

Apr 20, 2008 14:40

I'm sticking this at the beginning for all you Princess Tutu aficionados: I finished the series for the second time last night, and I love it even more. The first time, I loved it mostly for the plot. But this time, I fell in love with the characters. And I still loved the music and the message and the themes and everything else that is awesome ( Read more... )

I totally read your comment on Kenneth ("...say such things!") in a Kenneth voice.

I really really wonder if Russell Brand tried to shag KBell.

Ha!

That is a very good question. I don't see why not.

Professionalism?

Possibly.

I feel like someone should take some clips of Russell Brand and dub them with "Do I make you horny, baby? Randy? Do I, yeah?"

What's interesting is noting the differing comedic styles among the Apatow crew. If you look at Knocked Up (Judd Apatow), Superbad (Seth Rogen), and Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Jason Segel), they're all very funny movies, but the humor seems to be quite different. For my money, Superbad is the worst of the lot, and I'm having a hard time comparing Knocked Up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall because I have a feeling that Knocked Up was somehow funnier, but I might like Forgetting Sarah Marshall better overall.
I believe I agree completely. I didn't dislike Superbad overall--there was quite a bit about it that I found funny--but I've had a serious soft spot for Seth Rogen ever since F&G and am sad to say that Superbad lowered my opinion of him. On the other hand, FSM has made me think even more highly of Jason Segel. I think FSM manages to be very very funny while maintaining its heart all the way through. Sarah Marshall is arguably the least likable character in it, but she's hardly irredeemable, and while the movie is certainly ( ... )

Ooh, I love when people agree with me so much! It makes me feel like I'm not crazy!

Oh, me too. I thought it was funny, but not as funny as hyped.

And now I have to see HIMYM even more.

I think FSM manages to be very very funny while maintaining its heart all the way through.
Yep. Absolutely.

Comparing FSM to Knocked Up is difficult because I think they're both very good, very funny, very nice movies. Right now I would definitely choose FSM. The fact that it's the one I just saw could be influencing my decision, but I think FSM wins because there are more cool and funny characters in it.
Yep, I'm with you.

Oh my God, I was completely cracking up when he was screaming over the phone, as was my movie-going companion. That was fantastic.
The whole theatre was cracking up so hard we couldn't even hear some of what he was saying. That was hysterical.

And my favorite Paul Rudd ( ... )

Yeah. My students talk about it like it's the funniest movie in the history of ever and my response is always to say that I agree that it's funny, but it's not THAT funny.

That was not a problem for me because there was a grand total of 10 people in the theatre. Me and my friend and 8 senior citizens.

It's from the scene when Peter goes to the restaurant alone, and he's calling to the rest of the staff to clear the other half of the table. "It's just one guy!" It's hilarious because the delivery is such that he's not deliberately mocking Peter; he's just clarifying what he sees as an absurd request.Even without that line I think that first Jonah Hill scene was my favorite of his parts of the movie. Probably because he managed to act like a somewhat normal person ( ... )

Yeah, I'd agree. Although his Aldous Snow fanboy subplot was fairly amusing and led to one of the LOL moments: Aldous's response to his question about whether he'd listened to the demo.

While I certainly laughed the entire way through, I think that my favorites bits were where they skewered modern television. Crime Scene: Scene of the Crime!

Check this out. My favorite bits are the video clips:
"We found bones covered in semen."
"Human?"
"The bones or the semen?"
"Both."
"Both."

With the exception of one or two scenes that are just sweet, every single scene in the movie is funny.

ITA. I laughed just as hard the second time I saw it. I haven't seen any of Apatow's other movies (only his tv shows), so I can't really comment on how they compare to FSM. But seeing FSM makes me want to see the other films. But I agree that the humor didn't seem forced in this film at all like other comedies do. That's because, like you said, the humor was rooted in the characters.

Kristen Bell, as many have said, does a good job making her character sympathetic, and her performance never made me think of Veronica.

I agree her performance was very different and she did a great job. But I don't think I will ever be able to look at KB without thinking of Veronica.

And Jonah Hill does have some amusing moments (even though the hilarious bit I heard on a radio ad wasn't even in the movie [much like the "Do you want to choose the outfit you break up with me in?" line!]), but I still do not know why he exists.I can't believe they ( ... )

I'm glad you liked this movie. I'm also pretty ecstatic about you being smiley-smiles with the movie theatre chick.

How disappointed were you when Laura Prepon ditched her gorgeous red hair and went blonde?

I finally managed to upload the Drip album. And there is a track called "Bloodletting." Coincidinky!?! Will post later.
