So, I expected perfection, and I have to say it isn't there yet but it's still pretty sweet. Since you can go basically anywhere (I'm pretty sure homeless people in Japan would know this information) and find out what's awesome/what sucks about the iPhone, I won't list the obvious ones here. The ones that did annoy me that seemed like simple oversights, or that were awesome are as such:
- Contacts has a 'favorites' list, but only for phone calls. There is an SMS App, but it doesn't access the favorites list. However, if I go to Phone, then Contacts, then Favorites, pick someone, I can then text message them. Odd.
- I can't drag things to the iPhone in iTunes. I have to select what to sync. This annoys me, I don't want to make playlists, I just want to manage it like a folder (or, rather, like I manage my non-shuffle iPod).
- I can't Sync the phone and use it at the same time, though it does let me "Slide to Cancel".
- The speaker for non-headphone usage is at the bottom left (if vertical) or right bottom (if horizontal with home button on the right as is the default orientation). I think the microphone is down there too. I tend to cover it up with my thumb when I'm holding it.
- The ringtones in it suck.
+ iTunes found gmail in my keychain, asked me for access to it, and set up everything. That was pretty cool.
- iTunes didn't copy over my wireless network settings. Why not?
- I tried the SIM card from my RAZR, it said "Incorrect SIM", and wanted me to connect to iTunes to reactivate, but it still let me do all non-network things like iPod.
- The SIM card says "3G" on it, I thought that ironic. It works in the razr (not 3G there either, afaik).
= The dock/dock connector feels more snug than it has to be, but otherwise is not a problem.
? The headset they give didn't have those black ear protector things to put around it.. ?
+ the side buttons don't do much when the phone is locked (there's a button on top near the sim tray to lock it/power it off). You have to press home, then slide to make it wake up. On the left are volume buttons (that don't work when it's locked) and a physical switch for silent/audible mode that DOES work when it's locked. I like this method. Options screen lets me set vibrate on/off for both modes, volume/ringtone for the audible mode, and boolean toggles for unchangeable sounds for various events like calendar, email, etc. for audible mode (they don't all use the ringtone, the sounds can not be configured).
I haven't yet made a call on it, but activation was painless. I got to the store at 8:51, waited and then walked in at 9, asked if they had any 8GB ones and they said they might and sent me to the back, got halfway and they said they didn't, so I was leaving, and they caught up to me and said they were getting some in 30 minutes. Moved my car (the garage under the mall was open by this time so I could put it there, where it was cheaper), came back, played with the iPhone a bit, looked at the Adobe software (no Illustrator box or I'd probably have been spending double today), played with Illustrator on one of the PCs.. they walked over and told me the 8GB had arrived and invited me over to the counter. Got one, no problems. Whee! :)
I'll continue to give my impressions over the next week or so, if I remember and get bored. Maybe I'll write a post FROM the phone.
