Ryo is stuck in a position where he’s both a little too important and not quite important enough. On one hand he’s that impressive member who has two bands to his credit and an extremely long history as a ‘Johnny’. On the other hand, he’s just a member that’s there when required and gone to work elsewhere when he’s not.
Either way neither band quite considers him a full time member and most band mates seem to think he’s just a little too hard to get to know. Sure Pi does his best to get him included, inviting everyone out to dinner regularly. But in the end it’s only ever the two of them that end up going and Pi always abandons him too early; swayed to distraction by a interesting someone with a coy simile or a fluttering set of lashes.
If he were honest with himself Ryo would admit that dinner with Pi tended to make him feel worse, throwing his isolation into the light. Which begged the question of ‘why do I keep going?’ to which he had yet to figure out an answer.
Ryo slumped onto his couch and nursed a beer. It was Friday night and he wasn’t needed at work for either band for the next two days. He ought to be out drinking with friends but Ryo dreaded the list of excuses they would come up with to avoid him. Though there was Jin. At least if Jin gave him an excuse Ryo would be able to trust it as the actual truth. After all Jin was so social, it was almost a fault, so Ryo could be almost certain that he already had plans for his Friday night.
I’m bored. Wanna hang?
-Ryo
Ryo sent the message off, fully expecting to be knocked back but taking solace in the knowledge that Jin would genuinely mean it when he said he was sorry but he had other plans.
Ten minutes passed and Ryo threw out his empty beer bottle, grabbing a new one from his fridge.
Another ten minutes passed and Ryo found himself sorting through his DVD collection and muttering about his own bad taste. How could someone own so many movies and not be interested in watching any of them?
Ten minutes later saw him nursing yet another beer and scowling at thin air. Even Akanishi was ignoring him. Ryo considered calling his mother for a chat before shrugging the idea off as the most pathetic thing a single male could do on a Friday night.
His door bell rang and he scowled. He hadn’t ordered any food. As he walked toward the door the scent of pizza wafted through and Ryo smiled to himself, picking up his wallet from the side table. He didn’t care what apartment the delivery guy was supposed to go to; he was going to accept, pay for and eat someone else’s pizza order.
Ryo opened the door and his smirk faltered before morphing into a genuine smile.
“Hey.”
“Hey.” said Jin as he pushed past Ryo, slipping out of his shoes and wandering into the apartment.
Ryo shut the door and threw his wallet back onto the side table before following. Jin had opened the pizza box on the table, letting the smell of seafood pizza fill the air as a six pack landed on the table next to it.
“Have you seen this yet?” Jin asked, holding up a DVD of the latest hit movie.
“Not yet but I’ve been wanting to.” Ryo grinned.
“Cool. Put it on.” Jin threw him the DVD and went to the kitchen to get plates.

Two hours later Ryo found himself sitting on the floor in front of his couch surrounded by pizza crusts and empty beer bottles as the credits rolled on the screen. Jin clinked his empty beer bottle against Ryo’s half full one and grinned.
“Good movie.”
“Yeah, thanks for that.” Ryo smiled and started piling their rubbish into the pizza box.
“Hey, leave that for a bit. Let’s chat.” Jin declared, throwing his beer bottle onto the pile.
“About what?”
“I don’t know; stuff?” Jin suggested. Ryo realised that there were fingers running through his hair and looked a question at his friend, “How come you didn’t have plans tonight? I thought you were always busy with your bands. I almost never get to see you anymore.” Jin complained, his head resting on the couch behind them.
“Most people don’t like hanging out with me. I make them uncomfortable. I didn’t figure you’d be available either but you came.”
“Course I came. I skipped out on karaoke to be here. I missed you.”
“You missed me?” Ryo asked, wondering if the alcohol was affecting Jin more than usual.
“Yeah, don’t you remember when we were juniors and we hung out all the time. And you were such a tiny monkey that Kame called me a paedophile when he found out that you were my first kiss.” Jin chuckled at his memories and Ryo found himself smiling too.
He’d almost forgotten those days so long ago. Jin had been one of the few to believe Ryo’s actual age. There were so many others that would laugh and insist that he had to halve his age to get anywhere near an accurate number.
He remembered that kiss too. It had been the start of a three week adventure of hiding in storerooms and staying back after dance practice and snickering every time they almost got caught. Eventually, though, they really had gotten caught and subjected to a stern reprimand and an explanation that their behaviour was unacceptable. They had nodded their heads and apologised. Neither had initiated anything physical since. They had simply reverted back to their plutonic friendship and never spoke about what they had done together; what they had discovered.
“I thought you might have forgotten about that. You never said anything about it after we got caught.”
“I never said anything about it before we got caught either. I was always too nervous. We didn’t talk; we just did.” Jin muttered.
His fingers were still in Ryo’s hair, rubbing circles at the base of his skull. He wondered what this meant. Was this an invitation?
Ryo moved forward, barely more than an inch, and tried not to smile too widely when Jin mirrored his action. They met each other half way. It was a simple, closed mouth kiss but it felt to Ryo as though that kiss caused the world to slot back into its rightful place. He hadn’t felt this in years; the feeling of everything just being ‘right’.
The kiss grew to kisses and the world tilted as they moved to stretch out on the rug. Somehow Ryo ended up laying on top of his solid friend and revelling in the feel of the man beneath him.
“Wait.” Jin was breathless but determined to stop as he pushed up on Ryo’s chest.
“What?”
“Just a sec,” Jin reached out an arm and, without disturbing their position, managed to reach the remote. He hit the mute button and killed the repetitive music of the start menu then wrapped his arms back around Ryo’s neck, “That was so not the right background music for this.” he smirked and pulled his friend down to resume previous activities.

Ryo sat in NewS’ dressing room and flicked through a magazine without really seeing the articles in front of him. Instead he was thinking over the past two days. This time he had discussed it with Jin. They both agreed that it wasn’t just a ‘playing around’ sort of thing. They had officially declared themselves a couple, albeit only to themselves. Nishkido Ryo’s world was suddenly much less lonely.
“You’re in love!”
Ryo looked up to find Koyama pointing a shocked finger directly at him.
“Huh?”
“I can always tell when someone falls in love,” Koyama waved over the other members of the band and pointed again, “Look at him, he’s all shiny with ai!”
“Keii-chan, you cannot tell when someone’s in love.” Shige reasoned.
“I can! I knew when Massu fell in love. Didn’t I?” Koyama looked at Massuda, awaiting confirmation. Massu went pink.
“Actually, I was in love a long time before you said anything. What you noticed was when I got laid.”
Ryo snorted at that and Koyama looked disappointed. A skinny pair of arms wrapped around his shoulders from behind the couch and Tegoshi’s face appeared in Ryo’s side vision.
“Maybe,” Tegoshi teased, “it’s both. Did you sleep with someone you’re in love with Ryo-chan?”
Damn Tegoshi and his damned thought processes.
“I told you he was in here.” Pi voice interrupted from the doorway and everyone looked up to see him showing Jin into the room. Ryo went pink but didn’t try to stop his smile.
“Hey.”
“Hey.” Jin answered as he flopped down onto the couch and casually pushed Tegoshi away. “How long’s the rest of your break?”
Ryo looked down at his watch.
“Maybe three quarters of an hour. Why?”
“Let’s go out to lunch.”
Jin got back up, pulling Ryo by the hand and out the door. He could hear mutters of ‘kawaii’ behind him. Ryo went even pinker. It wasn’t until he was nearly out of the building that he realised that the rest of NewS was following along behind.
“What are you guys doing?”
“We’re coming to lunch with you, of course.” Koyama answered with a cheeky little grin. Tegoshi winked. Ryo groaned.
“I thought you wanted them to spend more time with you?” Jin asked quietly.
“Yeah, but I don’t want them to know that.” Ryo answered with a grin.
“Baka,” Jin teased before turning to the others, “Come on guys, the more the merrier.”
