Shige thought it was vaguely catharthic. Being with Ohno. There was something so calming about sitting there, waiting for dinner to swim up and sacrifice itself on your behalf. Shige felt a little guilty at being so high up on the food chain but when he mentioned it to his sempai he only got a quizzical look in return.
Some fifteen minutes later Ohno explained that he'd never looked at it from the fish's point of view and he was having trouble getting into the mindset of a creature with a three second memory. How do you follow a chain of thought of an animal that can't remember what started the chain?
Shige contemplated that one himself as they sat there on the waves. It was a surprisingly deep question for something that, really, had no consequence. Somehow thinking about it left Shige feeling like he was contemplating some large philosophical question.
"I don't think there's an answer." Shige told himself.
"Not all questions have answers." Ohno replied, and calmly wound in his line to recast closer to some indescernable disturbence in the water's surface.
Shige let the moment wash over him. Sitting on the ocean with a man supposedly less intelligent but, he was coming to realise, rather more wise than he'd ever expected.
"Would you mind if I came fishing with you more often?"
Ohno smiled with a hint of mystery and inclined his head a little.
"I would like that. But only if you don't waste a good catch."
Shige frowned in confusion.
Ohno nodded toward the line in Shige's hand that was bending with the strength of the fight on the end of it's line.
"Ah! What do I do??"
Ohno smiled to himself and calmly proped his rod against the railing before coming up behind his kouhai. With Shige holding the reel and Ohno holding Shige's hands, guiding them, the pair fought against the fish and the current until a silver sheen of scales broke the surface and they pulled into onto the deck.
Shige sagged against the shorter man at his back, exhausted from the sudden physical activity and quietly thrilled at what they had achieved.
"I've never caught a fish before."
Ohno smiled and pulled a camera out of his pocket to hand to one of the crew and nodded at Shige to pick up the fish.
Shige hesitated slightly, disturbed by the way it floped about at their feet. Ohno instructed him quietly and with endless patience, showing Shige how to grip in under the gill and hold away from his body until the thrashing stopped.
When they sorted everything out Ohno turned them toward the camera and they smiled like idiots as the crewman took a photo.
Hours later, as the boat was being tied up and Shige was cautiously trying to navagate between the moving deck and the stationery jetty, Ohno took Shige's hand and smiled slightly.
"Shall we have your fish for dinner? I have three whole receipe books entirely about fish back at my place." Ohno asked.
Something in the inflection of the words and the way his sempai's hand lingered even after he was on firm ground made it perfectly clear to Shige that he was being invited over for more than just dinner and a display of culinary skills, and while normally he would say no, Shige didn't want to end his time with his mysterious sempai just yet.
"I'm good at cooking." he replied in his own attempt at round about talking.
