“Red light. Stand by.”

Things were not going well.

Which wasn’t to say that events usually played out better, because they didn’t. But on the grand scheme of things-

BOOM!

A glancing hit. The LAAT/i rocked violently to the side. Ahsoka could hear the pilot-whose name, Roller, suddenly made so much sense-yell as he reverted to defensive maneuvers. Rex’s grip on her arm, and her death-hold on the straps hanging from the ceiling, were there only things that kept her from bouncing around inside the hull.

It didn’t help that the only things she could see were six red-tainted, battle hardened troopers crowded in a small space whose lives rested in the hands of the pilot.

“Welcome back to the front lines, ma’am,” Rex muttered beside her.

At the other end of the hold one of the troopers, a lieutenant from the look of the stripes on his armor, let out a hollow bark of laughter. “Did you miss this, General?”

The LAAT/i lurched right and Ahsoka felt a distinct sense of vertigo. They must be nearing the insertion point.

Though some of the clones’ visors were not looking at her, she could sense all eyes were on her. Ahsoka swallowed down her fears and peered seriously at each troop, lingering slightly longer on Rex than the rest. A cocky smirk crossed her lips. “I did… but I missed you boys more.”

The LAAT/i jerked to a stop and the red interior lights flashed green.

“End of the line, ladies,” announced the pilot as the blast doors hissed open. They didn’t need to be told twice.

Ahsoka followed the other troopers off the gunship and signaled to the pilot ALL CLEAR. The pilot signaled back as the repulsors rumbled to life and the blast doors slid shut. It hovered there for a moment before doing a 180° and disappeared into the night sky.

They stood on an open-air landing platform located halfway down a black crystalline tower and connected to a food processing facility. It was commonly used for the transport of produce and, occasionally, livestock, before the city was evacuated. Crates of vegetables line the back wall connecting the pad to the rest of the building, and the upper floors served as an overhang far above their heads.

To Ahsoka, it was like standing in an industrial cave. She peered over the edge and noticed she could not see the ground-but whether that was due to the low-tech environment or the dizzying height remained to be seen.

Captain Rex stepped up to her right. “Was as you predicted, ma’am. We’re hidden from the battle at this location.”

“Perfect. If we can make it to the ground levels without detection, it’ll be a free stretch to the city’s local energy generators.” Her lekku twitched. “Not how you thought you’d be spending your R&R, huh Captain?”

Captain Rex bowed his head a little closer to Ahsoka. She could hear the grin in his voice despite his helmet’s voice amp system. “A star lit stroll and tinny fireworks, General? Couldn’t ask for anything better.”

Ahsoka felt her cheeks heat up, and could only hope the severe lack of light hid her blush from view, as she watched the other five clones, including the lieutenant, secure their kit and pulled out their ziplines. She dropped her pack to the ground and did the same, firing the grapple into the reinforced duracrete. Claws hooked into the platform, burying beneath the hard material, and locked in place.

Tugging twice to make sure her harness was secure, she turned and grinned at the Captain. “Party’s just getting started, Rex.” She winked, and then signaled to the other troops lined up on the edge. “Eyes on the prize, boys. Let’s not keep Anakin waiting.”

On the count of three, the six clones plus Jedi leapt off the platform, backwards, and rappelled down the side of the building in controlled rapid descent. One wrong move, one mistake, could mean broken bones or death.

The enormous transparisteel windows cracked beneath their feet as they hit the side of the building and kicked off, but otherwise took their weight. Ahsoka tried not to think about the speed at which they hurtled down hundreds of meters, anchored to the landing platform above by only a thin chord, as they ground rushed up to meet them.
