I love it. What magnetizes me to them in a sense is how palpable the existing relationship between them is, whatever it is; that they remember each other clearly, opinionated about the memory too, and that whatever the criticism and teasing that snapshot depicts both concern and reassurance.
I could obviously talk way too long about it. Run while you can maybe!
Oh, hush. I agree with you completely; that was one of my favorite parts about the movie. How little was actually shown about each of the character's backstories, and yet - how much we can extrapolate. That was one of the most telling scenes, imo.
If I'm running, you are definitely coming with. ;)
Yes! That is it, the very thing. I can see how people who only watch it once feel like it scratched most characters' surfaces without giving us much else but even a second rewatch and most certainly a third et al reveals that in truth we have a great deal of implication to go on. It's really why it's so intriguing to pick them up like this I think. And yes definitely a revealer as far as all the scenes, and quick which felt very real and enough that I believed it, that whatever history we were supposed to get from 'Arthur stick in the mud' reference and so on was tangible.
In which case I might as well stay right here, yes? XDDD
Not to mention the immediate "he's in Mombasa," and the scene in the taxi with Eames shooting & Arthur driving. And, of course the fan-favorites -- the "darling" scene, the chair-kick scene, both which I think pale in comparison to that ^ scene. If only I could write a thesis on this......
You're right, better we spare the energy for other pursuits. Attempting to whip these boys into line will probably take all that we have. :D
YES. When he says that I was like...well it is his business to know details, know who is available for jobs and who isn't, but he says it with the kind of clarity that someone uses only when they have a very sharp idea of what's going on in specific relation to who it is, not just because it's his job to know stuff.
And yes again! Does Eames even do lines? Arthur is positively made of them.
Ahhh, exactly. From the interviews, it seems like they both had some kind of military background - headcanon tentatively says they met some time in there. What say you?
Anyway, we're obviously on the same page. I'm very glad. ;)
Well, curly-cues and squiggles and hieroglyphics, that's more Eames's style. We'll drill an imagination out of you yet, Arthur.
Yes, and I think that's plausible as well. The implied relationship doesn't feel new was definitely one of my first distinct impressions about them. If anything it feels quite old and as though there was some definitive estrangement in there and drifting as is inevitable when jobs call for people who aren't each other. To a degree I see Arthur having fallen in with Mal and Dom rather early, enough to love them both and to not be able to you know give them up when Mal dies and Dom runs. He has to follow Dom. His loyalty to Dom is so almost painfully fierce that I definitely dig those roots down deep, but there's something of an equal but different poignancy with Eames. Cobb obviously knew him before too so chances are they even met near to round the same time but event A, B, or C had them going in different directions
( ... )
Mm. There's another lovely thing about the film; our freedom to build up these character's very foundations as we please. If you ever feel the need, I'd love to explore the A&E backstory with you. RPwise would be ideal, but even OOC would be great.
Eames will give him points for the kick-without-gravity thing. And then subtract them away for the all-too-predictable lineface reaction. Really, Arthur, you're like a living caricature.
I would as well -- I'm always tentative on asking people for more than my initial request of one log or the like because I don't want to inadvertently chase people off with over-enthusiasm, but that would be fantastic. And if we delve into it RPwise then there is inevitably the OOC discussion that goes with it, so we get a two for one in a manner of speaking!
Arthur says he was just doing his job [and mentally he thinks trying to atone for the spectacular fuck-up that was not realizing Fischer's subconscious would be militarized] though I of course think he should have infinite points for that zero-g kick. Strangely hot, not even going to lie, but that's cleverness in a suit I guess.
Subtractions for caricaturisms are all but a must. Oh Arthur :/
If you guys do a back story! I must read it! I've been dying so to speak to see how these two know each other. There really is so much that could be done.

Cleverness in a very well-fitting suit, mind you. Because -- well, that clearly had to be mentioned.

Oh yes, of course. Only the sharpest tailoring for the Point Man. No aesthetic slacking.

No anything slacking, which will hopefully be rectified soon. If Ariadne gets her way. ;)

HAHAHA so true. No slacking anything. Drinking and singing included. Oh dear.
