Like the Haruhi before me, I think it's a good idea to put something like this up!
The thing about canon is, to most people, upon first appearance Haruhi looks and is the part of a male. For the sake of the series her voice/appearance all registers as male. This isn't the case with everyone, of course, but 95% of the people it is. Kyouya and the leader of the group of girls from another school, for example, were the only ones really noted to guess it at first sight. Some others, the Host Club minus Tamaki really, got it after observing her a bit.
However, even though some got it, a vast majority just thought she was a male who was more feminine and liked other males. This is especially pointed out at the end of the manga when the students weren't surprised about her wearing a dress and just thought "Haruhi always did seem the sort...".
ALSO. HARUHI WON'T EVEN TELL YOU HER GENDER UNTIL YOU'RE ALL "WOAH SHI ARE YOU REALLY A GIRL?" And then she'll just be all "...it's not like I ever said I wasn't."
SO WITH THAT:
Would your character be able to tell Haruhi is a girl?
If so: would they tell others?
Anything else?
