Her boss wanted those papers signed before the weekend, so she had to work on Friday. This particular Friday. The one that was not supposed to be an ordinary Friday…
Behind her desk, Ukraine buried her face in her arms and she could hear the minute hand on her watch do that familiar tic, another minute taken away from her special weekend.
3:27 pm
She sighed as the thought of a delicious lunch prepared by Matthew Williams was suffocated by the grumbling of her empty stomach.
The Canadian sounded disappointed on the phone earlier in the morning, though he would never admit it. He just said It’s okay, I understand. And he did, they both did. It’s not like the world would stop turning just because both nations decided to go on a date… right?
No…
That’s ridiculous…
…
But… it did feel like the world stopped turning every time they went on a date… even after seven months of official dating and six years of liking each other.
Yes, it was frustrating sometimes, not being able to spend some time together after world meetings, but that’s how things were and, despite that, they were determined to make their relationship work, because being nations had always been busy, but, most of all, lonely, and neither Canada, nor Ukraine had ever liked empty houses.
3:29 pm
Her bags lied by her side as she waited for the messenger to deliver the last pile of documents from her boss’ office at the Embassy. She’d sign them, take a cab and start her long-waited weekend by her boyfriend.
They’d decided to stay in Matthew’s flat in Ottawa to save time, so she’d be able to make it in twenty minutes from her office to his apartment.
They’d rent a movie, buy some ice cream and-
She jumped out of her seat, startled by the sound of the wooden door being knocked at from the other side. Her assistant hadn’t announced the messenger, and now her cheeks were flushed, her heart was beating fast against her rib cage and her chest was heaving. She’d make sure to talk to her assistant about security measures and announcing people before letting them in, but right now, having those papers signed was her priority.
Ukraine gulped, took a deep breath, trying to calm down, and called the messenger inside.
The door opened immediately and there he stood. A tall, well built man, wielding the sweetest of smiles. If only he had been the messenger…
3:31 pm
“Привет, сестра.”
This was gonna be a long day…
Tired of looking at his brother, self-enslaved by the meticulous cleaning he had committed himself into, Alfred stretched out lazily on the bed, taking in his hand the photo frame Matthew had dusted and put on the bedside table. He remembered the day he took that picture. She had just gotten out of the plane and, before he could say hamburger, she was jumping into his brother’s arms.
“T’was a good idea to bring the camera to the airport after all, huh?” He said.
“What?” Matthew adjusted his glasses on the bridge of his nose to take a better look at his brother. “Oh, yeah… Katyusha loves that picture.” He smiled.
“Of course! It was a great shot!” Alfred praised himself inwardly for his amazing skills as a photographer.
After a few seconds, Matthew spoke.
“Thanks…”
“You’re welcome, brother!” Said the American enthusiastically, putting the photo frame back on the table. Matthew discretely put it back in its right place.
“I’m talking about today. Coming here… even if you didn’t help me cleaning and I had to cook for you....” Matthew felt the blank stare of his brother and shook his head, embarrassed. “What I wanna say is… thanks for coming…”
Alfred remained silent for a couple of seconds, staring intently at his brother through his glasses, as if pondering Matthew’s words. Then his usual bright smile spread back upon his face as he sat on the bed.
“Hey, I’m the hero! That’s what heroes do.” The other man couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Yeah, sure.”
“And speaking of heroic acts…” Alfred grinned. “Do you want me to take the bear for the weekend?”
“Nah, it’s okay. Kumajirou likes her.” It was Alfred who laughed this time.
“I mean… so you guys can have some privacy.”
The Canadian blushed at the sole thought. It was not his… first time with Katyusha, but he wasn’t really used to share these things with his brother. Alfred, on the contrary, seemed very comfortable with the topic. So comfortable, he had offered himself to take care of Kumajirou for the weekend, an offer Matthew couldn’t reject, since he hadn’t even thought about the bear… and now he realized this was probably the first time in his whole life he was the one who hadn’t taken into account the bear and not the other way around-
“That’s probably her.” Alfred dragged him out of his thoughts.
“What?”
“The door…”
“The-what?” He gaped. He may have heard the doorbell ringing while immersed in his thoughts, but he ignored it. And Ukraine said she’d call when she was done in her office, so it shouldn’t be her…
“Are you gonna keep her waiting?” Alfred was staring again.
“Uh… yeah… I-I mean, no!”
The Canadian dusted off his clothes, trying, at the same time, to fight the blush off his cheeks. Then he burst out of his bedroom. Alfred stretched lazily on the bed before following at a calmer pace. When he got to the hall, he could see Matthew standing at the open door, a shadow looming over his thin figure.
“Braginsky?”
“Ah! Привет, Alfred!” The Russian saluted cheerfully as a blond head, peeked over the giant’s shoulder.
