Thoughts: Martin is the greatest storyteller of any I've ever read. I first read this novel years ago, but going through a second time (with limited but poignant memories of things that come later) it is an even more rich story than it was the first time. Martin builds fabulously human characters and a real and invigorating world, and he binds it all together with an intense and intriguing plot. It is nearly impossible to choose a favorite character. The comparisons to Tolkien are apt, though I'd say Tolkien was more captivated by the after of the story; Martin is more concerned with the now, and it works.
