Queer bodies are a site of protest. Marked is a zine by and for radical queer people about how we use our bodies to present, negotiate and perform our identities. It is a feminist take on the process of becoming visible, of living queerly.
We’re seeking nonfiction - personal essays, conversations, rants, poetry and prose, and art - photography, mixed media/collage, about our marked bodies. We invite first person writing and art that explores visibility, agency, embodiment and survival. Submissions that attend to intersections of multiple identities within queer culture and the tensions of living in the margins are particularly welcome.
Topics may include (but are certainly not limited to):
becoming publicly modified - tattoo, piercing, scars
body image
beauty standards, and breaking them
fashion/style
capitalism
passing/not passing
size
becoming visible
craziness/sanity
trans-ness and queerness
how race, class and gender intersect with queerness/queer bodies
ability
violence
community
the body as a site of protest
Submissions should be no more than 750 words, and accompanied by a brief bio. No fiction or erotica at this time, please! Include your email and the name you’d like included if you’re selected as a contributor. You may submit more than one piece.
The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2008. Send all queries and submissions to markedzine@gmail.com. Writing should be submitted as a Word document, or copied into the body of an email. Art should be submitted in a web-friendly format. We hope you are open to conversations about editing. Please put Marked in the subject line. All contributors will receive a free copy of the zine.
