Now that the rant is out of the way:
We decided to watch a bunch of movies today (and I did my taxes).
first we watched the protector, the new movie from Tony Jaa, it was good, not great like his previous film Ong Bak.
then I decided to dig into my "got my financial aid, bought a bunch of crap pile." I always do that when I get financial aid, its almost a tradition, day #1 involves me splurging on $100 worth of DVDs. I've reigned it in a bit, as with my freshman year I purchased all of the Fushigi Yuugi anime at once on a total whim, just because I enjoyed the comic. This year I picked up the Lupin III movies box, Gundam Seed, and Maison Ikkoku.
Today we watched a total of 8 straight hours of anime, the first 8 episodes of Gundam seed, and the first eight of Maison Ikkoku.
I'm glad to finally own Gundam Seed, because I watched the majority of it back in 2002, but have forgotten alot of stuff. Now I can get caught up with my friend Todd.
Maison Ikkoku is awesome, My friend Reid was talking about it and Sarah and I are Huge Rumiko Takahashi fans, and I think it was the only series by her I had not seen. Yes its from the 80's, but I like old anime so :P I've recently been embracing more and more old anime because I've come under the realization that most new stuff is either really derivative of shows that are 10+ years old or just not for me. I love Bleach, Gintama, Deathnote, and tons more new stuff, but its not like how it used to be where I could watch almost any anime and like it. These newer shows pale in comaprison to shows like Harlock, Galaxy express, urusei Yatsura, Battle angel, or even Akira.
Back to Maison Ikkoku:
The story focuses primarily on the blossoming relationship between Yusaku Godai, a poor student down on his luck, and Kyoko Otonashi, the young, recently-widowed boarding house manager. There is also a small cast of seemingly crazy neighbors that do nothing but make Godai's life a living hell.
heres a clip of the opening (I love how they made it look like a colored pencil drawing):
and here is 1/3 of the first ep:
It's actually a lot like one of her previous works Urusei Yatsura (ie comedy/drama), except a lot more down to earth and no scifi that can be seen.
http://www.kcdvd.com/ thats the site I got it from, locally from KC. It is an import store, but he has a great selection.
