“This was to be expected,” Azula stated in an irritated tone as if commenting on the more annoying parts an insect. “His entire life he did nothing but disappoint people.”

Mai’s face was emotionless as she stared at Azula. She wished Azula would just go away, not rub salt into her wounds. She wouldn’t show her friend how she felt. That would just give the princess satisfaction.

“It was only a matter of time before he hurt you,” Azula said cruelly in a tone that was far too light. “He’s a fool for leaving, but it really shows that he doesn’t care about you. You deserve better.” Looking Mai directly in the eye she told the taller girl, “I would never abandon you.”

Although she didn’t let on, Mai knew better. Zuko had left her a note explaining everything. She was more confident in his love for her than anything else in the world. Mai smiled unconsciously as imagined the look that would be on Azula’s face when Zuko returned and took his rightful place as the Fire Lord.

Azula smiled at Mai, since her friend seemed to be in better spirits, her pep talk worked, if there was one thing she was proud of it was her ability to read people. The princess quickly excused herself and went to attend various counsel meetings.

Mai stayed in the palace and watched out the window, wondering how long it would take Zuko to return for her.
