On Books

From ironymaiden:

you only talk about reading in broad generalities. i'd like to hear about a book or two that you've read recently. how about a review, or something about a trend in current sf/fantasy writing that you like/don't like.

My reading habits recently have been almost exclusively World of Darkness game books. There are a TON of them. The 2nd edition game universe is really thick; one of the reasons why they rebooted the dang thing is there wasn't enough room left for player story after a while.

I've taken on GMing a rather large universe and there's a lot of stuff I haven't read. While I've found that handing the proper minion a book and an idea can be just as effective, I still have a lot of studying to do. :) Besides the game books, I have read though a decent chunk of The Church History of Britain by Thomas Fuller. It was published in the late 1800s, so it used my brain and I liked that but also had to open up my skull a little to freshen up. In historical but easier to read news, the internet is full of interesting, easy to read and often quirkily wrong historical information.

Sheesh. The last sci-fi/fantasy book I've read for pleasure was Christopher Moore's "Bloodsucking Fiends." Also vampire related, and a good read. It is a very plausable and fun look at what would happen if one were to have ended up a vampire rather on accident and had to go from a fairly routine sort of urban life to drinking blood and hanging out with a quirky night clerk. I liked "Lamb" better. It's still my favorite book by C. Moore EVAR. :)

Now to rant somewhat: Laurel K. Hamilton isn't great. But she did it first. The rest of you softcore-sci-fi folks are starting to get annoying. It's a typical trend: Someone gets successful at it (but really had to have started writing in that style like...5 years ago) and then a million of similar ilk appear of various quality. It's kinda like there was a few years where no movie was complete without a creepy little kid with some kind of creepy power.
