I originally posted this review on crunchyroll. I'm deleting my account on there so I thought I'd post here.
I just finished the second season of Hotaru no Hikari and I found it...
As charming as the first season! Other j-drama comedies usually annoy me, but I never felt that way (annoyed) while watching this one. There were enough serious elements thrown into the plot to make it relatable and yet interesting. Specifically, the running theme in season two was trying to become a better person. Although Hotaru failed at this most of the time, at least she gave it her all for Buchou’s sake. In love, it’s all about give and take. However, sometimes it is hard to give up certain things. There are certain aspects we can’t change about ourselves. Hotaru realized that and was able to accept herself. Although it’s not concrete character development (or at least not as much as I would have liked) , it is a step in the right direction.
Overall, I'm glad I was able to go through this journey with Hotaru and Buchou. I said goodbye to these characters after the first season and I didn't expect I'd have to do it all over again. I'm really going to miss these two characters and their relationship. I could have easily spent 30 episodes watching Ahomiya and Buchou sitting on their porch and drinking beer. Their scenes were always comfortable to watch, never awkward in the slightest.
Final rating: 8/10. I'd definitely recommend watching the first season and this one. Buchou and Hotaru are epitome of the “you complete me” saying. Two flawed human beings that make up for each other's weaknesses. A match made in heaven, really.
