...And surprisingly, this is NOT a Korean drama!
Heaven's Coins is an angst filled 12 episode Japanese drama that aired in 1995. If you have seen a few of the early dramas that aired in Korea in 2000, the developments in Heaven's Coins probably won't surprise you that much. Most likely you have seen these character types before. The situations these characters are thrown into aren't exactly original. It has as many plot points as I listed above and then some.
Brainless, addicting, tear-jerking, heart warming, melodramatic FUN. That is Heaven's Coins. You'll gain nothing from watching this drama, but you'll be entertained for hours. You'll experience a number of emotions when watching this drama. Anger...happiness... sadness and a little something in between. The writer will reel you in with the melodrama and refuse to let you go. Trying to watch any drama in between episodes is close to impossible. You can't bare to stay away from this train wreck for very long. This drama will push all your right buttons. The writer will make you fall in love with the main characters Aya, Shuichi and Takumi. It'll have you hoping that these characters wake up and start taking charge of their lives. You'll want to see them achieve their desires. You'll want to see them crawl out of depths of despair. But you know.... how dramas like this end.
If you're able to handle the first season of Heaven's Coins, I applaud you. If you have no interest in watching season two, I can't blame you. I haven't mustered up enough courage myself yet to check out season 2. I have an inkling of what's waiting and I'm not ready to throw myself back into their miserable world just yet.
Based on season 1 alone, I'd give Heaven's Coins an 8/10. If you're looking for a serious romance drama with a touch of darkness, I'd say give this one a try. It's different from the usual brainless OTT rom-com flair that you see airing in Japan today.
