My Life's Golden Age drama review

I just finished the 56 episode k-drama, My Life's Golden Age recently.  I wrote a review on it on crunchyroll and I thought I'd post my thoughts here as well.

Geum and Kyung Woo: It’s hard to root for a couple when the writing is so bias and weak. I never felt like Kyung Woo paid for the roller coaster of emotions he put Geum through. He hates her, he wants to marry her, he thinks she’s a parasite; apparently they’re in love now. If I had been in her shoes, I wouldn’t have accepted his love so easily. I would have made him suffer a little bit after all the insults he through at me. I certainly wouldn’t have gone with Geum’s method and beg him to marry me…

Hwang and Tae II: I thought the unraveling of their marriage was developed well. He hurt her deeply with his actions. She hurt him just as badly with hers. She thought it would make her feel better, it didn’t. After everything was said and done, both Hwang and Tae II were in pain. Their relationship had soured, communication had failed and they could no longer trust each other. Hwang had risked it all and lost everything. She had to beg for it all back…and that’s where the writer lost me with them. The re-construction of their relationship was written with as much insult as Geum and Kyung Woo’s. The writer should have never divorced them in the first place- Tae II should have shown more compassion towards Hwang after she explained the motive behind her actions.

The parents: Finishing the second half of this drama was really hard because of them. Listening to Hwang and Geum get insulted by their mother-in-laws time and time again pissed me off as a female viewer. Why? Because their equally flawed significant others didn’t get the same treatment. Even when they were at fault, the writer still found a way to spin it around. I usually like how screenwriter Lee Jung Sun writes the parents in her dramas (straight-forward and full of tough love) but I thought the parents in My Life’s Golden Age were too cold. They were too hard on the daughter-in-laws and they gave the sons too much slack. The bias was too obvious...

All the other characters: Were pretty much useless.

My overall opinion on the drama: My Life’s Golden Age was an okay family drama. I’d rate it a 6.5/10. The love lines could have been better established. It was kind of hard to root for certain couples when you despise one half of the pairing. That being said, the weak character development did give me mixed feelings about the characters. This drama faltered in the second half a lot because of it (weak characterization)

I’m not sure if I would recommend watching My Life’s Golden Age. There are better family dramas out there (Golden Bride, Be Strong Geum Soon, etc) and there are worse family dramas out there (Loving you a Thousand Times, You are My Destiny). I guess if you’re looking for a more realistic family drama, you can give this one a shot.
