Hermione stepped out of the Floo, brushing the soot from her robes. Looking up, she was greeted by an all too familiar smirk.
“What excuse did you give them this time?” The blond brushed some soot off her shoulder, pulling her in closer.
“Told them we had to discuss some issues with your payment for the firm's services. Seems perfectly logical to them that Blaise is useless with paperwork and would send me to handle the situation.”
A proud grin gracing his normally haughty features, Draco kissed her. “You really should have been a Slytherin, Granger...Salazar must be turning in his grave knowing that Gryffindor stole you from us.”
To that she really had no response but a smile, and allowed him to lead her to the dining room. It was hardly unusual to find Hermione at Malfoy Manor these days. Though her relationship with Draco was a secret to the public, her family and friends, Narcissa was more than supportive. The Malfoy matriarch was more than happy to support them, especially if it meant Draco divorcing Astoria.
Draco had married Astoria shortly after she graduated from Hogwarts, at Lucius's arrangement. However, it wasn't long before Astoria's intentions became clear, and the family fortune slowly shrank. After Lucius's death the year previous, Draco had finally put his foot down. Blaise had done Draco a favour in representing him for the divorce proceedings, but what Draco hadn't expected was to come into contact with Hermione Granger again. She, for about 3 years at this point, had been working with Blaise, mostly keeping him organized. Her friends hadn't been happy that she was working with the Slytherin, but as Blaise had managed to fly under the radar during their Hogwarts years, they didn't cause too much of a fuss.
It also probably helped that he and Ginny were seeing each other.
In working on the case, Draco and Hermione had come to a truce, and it was clear that the war had changed Draco for the better. Not an experience Hermione would wish upon anyone, but she would be lying if she said it hadn't made a positive change on his outlook.
Draco and Hermione had put a term to their relationship about two months into the divorce case. Because of the publicity that would result, they decided to keep things quiet until after the divorce was final...which was yesterday. They'd be making a formal statement soon, something required when you held as high status in the Wizarding Society as they did.
Narcissa was hosting the St. Mungo's Charity Ball this year, and they'd be making the announcement there. One week.
They had one week to tell family and friends, and then everyone would know. They knew the gossip rags were going to have a field day, but it was worth it. Hermione was more than ready to tell everyone. She was getting tired of seeing other women fawning over Draco at the Ministry, hoping that they would be the next Mrs. Malfoy. Draco did his best to dissuade them, telling them all that being recently divorced, he needed time before entering that scene again, but these women were unscrupulous.
Entering the dining room, Narcissa rose to greet them. Draco noticed the glint in his mother's eyes, and knew she was practically planning the wedding in her head. Watching his mother chat amiably with Hermione, he smiled knowingly. How his mother knew was beyond him, but he really wasn't surprised.
They hadn't been together long, but Draco knew it felt right, and knew that this was what he should have felt when he proposed to Astoria. He loved Hermione, and he would not only be announcing to the world that they were together at the ball, but he would also be asking her to marry him. Of course, he planned to ask her before the ball, because he knew if he put her on the spot like that in front of everyone, she would likely kill him.
But if she said yes, their announcement at the ball would just be that much bigger.
“Draco? Did you hear me?”
Pulled out of his thoughts, Draco looked up at his mother.
“No mother. What did you say?”
“Hermione and I were discussing what colour she should wear for the ball. What do you think?”
With a smirk, he answered.
“I think everyone would love to see their Gryffindor Princess in Slytherin Green. Merlin knows it suits her.”
Narcissa smiled, and Hermione, with a smirk of her own, playfully hit his arm. Yes, it certainly would suit her.
