Gina's Story Part V
I woke up in my bed. I opened my eyes and caught sight of Martin sitting at my desk, his cell phone to his ear. He hadn't noticed I was awake yet.
“No doubt. It had to be, given the circumstances. Make it clean.... Yeah, I know. I'm just glad I came and got her, otherwise....yeah.”
He turned his head slightly and saw me move. His eyes went wide for a moment, but quickly returned to their generally calm state. He told whomever he was talking to that he'd call to check in later and then he hung up. I sat up and he moved to sit on the edge of the bed. He told me he'd called the police shortly after he'd moved me to my bed.
The image of my mother came rushing back. I was shaking as the tears started to fall. Martin wrapped his arms around me and just held me, letting me cry. I don't even know how long we sat there like that, but soon the police were at the door. He helped me out of bed and we answered the door. Martin pointed the investigators in the direction of the kitchen, and one of the officers sat with us in the living room to ask questions. I told the officer everything, from my father's alcoholism, to him hitting me, Martin coming to get me last night, and then coming back today to...well, what we found.
He asked me if my father owned a gun. I answered simply that yes, he did, and that he normally kept it a lockbox in the closet. An officer was sent in, and came out carry a very empty lock box. I'd had my suspicions, but now that it was staring me in the face, I nearly lost it completely. It certainly explained why my father wasn't here when we got back.
Martin hadn't left my side the entire time, and I was glad for it. It had hit me sometime during the officer's questions that he was all I had now. Truly. When they found my father, he was going to prison, simple as that. I knew I'd gladly testify against him for everything...anything. Even if for some reason they couldn't find enough to get him for killing my mother, I'd have him put in jail for assault. Anything. I was done with him. He'd caused me enough pain to last a lifetime.
The officer told me the investigation was now open, and that it might be better for me to stay somewhere else for the time being. Martin's arms tightened around me, and I knew I didn't need to think about my choice for more than two seconds. I told the officer that I'd be staying with Martin. The investigators took down all the necessary contact information, and told me that they would inform the school of the situation so I could take a day or two to get things in order. I just nodded.
While we were in my room packing my things, he told me we were going to go back to his parents' house. He explained that he didn't want me to be alone the next few days, and that if he needed to do something, I'd be fine with his family. I trusted him, and I needed some stability right now, and I had a feeling his family could be that stability. He told me that when we got there, he had to take care of a few things with his brother Donovan, but that he would be back as soon as he could.
Again, I simply nodded.
Soon, we were back in his car, going back to the place we'd left just mere hours before.
His parents were at the door waiting when we arrived. Elena pulled me into a hug the moment I stepped out of the car, and his father helped pulled my bags out of the car. Martin pried me away from his mother for a short moment, long enough to hug me close and place a kiss on my forehead.
“I'm going to take care of you. I won't let anything else happen to you. I promise. I will take care of this.”
Before I could say a word, he was back in the car, speeding out of the driveway.
