Goodbye Childhood Cereals?

This and this convey news that is somewhat startling and a bit sad, I think. On the one hand, I'm all for a healthier diet for children. On the other, it's a sad commentary when people buy and feed their kids crap and then sue the people who made the crap for making the crap. How fucking irresponsible and retarded do you have to be as a parent ( Read more... )

Oh you Devel's Advocate, you! :P

You play the devil's advocate well, though. You are absolutely correct about that wiggle room. Here' some more examples that you probably already know! They have all these nice low, or moderately acceptable numbers on the nutrition labels, right? Then you look at the serving size and realize that NOBODY ever eats that little. So all those numbers need to be at least doubled, and usually tripled or more. (Yay Ramen providing 1 billion percent of your daily sodium intake) OR...nowadays Transfat is a devil term. Lots of companies like to advertise "No transfat!" on their containers, knowing that people like me who know that they can get away with .4% transfat and legally call it 0% are one in a hundred. Probably less if you include those people that know that ANY kind of wholly or partially hydrodenated oil IS transfat, and is in the ingredients of things that say 0 transfat! When you combine that with what a realistic serving for most people is and the fact that your daily allowance of transfat is 3 grams I think, you get a lot of people eating lots of nice, healthy 0 Transfat goods that equal up to like 5-10 grams.

But! I must say that my opinion on parental responsibility still stands. Everyone knows what the sugar cereals are. The companies aren't hiding that, except, as you say, by maybe touting their uber enrichedness and not mentioning the truckload of sugar in each box. Toucan Sam and Count Chocula are not to blame for obesity, ADHD, hyper children, etc etc what comes from eating too much crap when you're little (or older). Mommy and/or Daddy are for spending their hard earned dollars on it when their kids say "I want!". Suing the cereal company because they make a product that you willingly bought is ridiculous. Sure they engage in marketing ploys, but then it comes down to 'let the buyer beware'. Read the labels. Educate yourself. Know what you're buying. That's just part of being a responsible, informed human being and is especially important when you are trying to be a responsible, informed parent.

P.S. Call me about tonight! I didn't mention on the message, but tomorrow is out cause of doing stuff with the family. But if this weekend isn't good, then there is always the next!
