“How are you doing?” Shinji asked. He usually didn’t bother talking to Rei as she always seemed aloof. But the last angel devastated Asuka, and he was concern about the affects of it on Rei. After all they went through a very similar experience.
“I’m fine,” Rei responded in a cold tone.
Shinji understood that it meant she wanted to be left alone. He frowned; it was obvious that she wasn’t fine.
He replied, “It’s okay. I know the pain you’re feeling. It’s caused by the monsters. It’s rough but eventually it goes away.”
“I doubt you do,” Rei argued. “I don’t remember anything of the battle- not even a vague impression of what happened. All I know is what I was told by your father: that I fought the angel and nothing more than that.”
“Then you’re lucky,” replied Shinji. “I wish I could forget all the pain I’ve endured during my battles.”
Rei didn’t want to talk about it, but she felt that Shinji was the lucky one. Not remembering anything made her feel like she was dead.
