to horse folks:

so. I was reading Fugly Horse of the Day and a post that started as "man isn't tail-numbing awful?" turned into a twisted-wire snaffle bash in the comments section. I can recall riding school horses in slow twists even when I was a little kid, and I remember asking my trainer (at Youth, no less) to let me use a twisted wire Dr. Bristol as my snaffle in the double bridle for Impy when I was 11 because she wasn't as responsive as I wanted her to be. looking back I'm surprised he switched the bits (we'd been using a smooth Dr. Bristol), after all I was just a kid. though I was petrified asking him so maybe my memory glossed over any real discussion of the matter, haha. but it worked out great for me then, and I've used similar bits on several horses I've ridden since. granted, they were usually the older or harder-mouthed ones, usually the horses I rode in twisted snaffles were older and had been through a few trainers already

ANYWAY, the way these people were carrying on about twisted wires, you'd think they were talking about bicycle chains or damn razor blades. I'm sure that in the wrong hands a twisted wire could ruin a good mouth, but then again so could a lot of bits. so I'm wondering...what do you guys think about twisted snaffles?
