What does it say about me that I really want to see this movie now that I know that Eomer's in it?? (OMG Eomer's in it! Hey Eomer! =D) Perhaps that I'm entirely the wrong kind of geek? (IS there a wrong kind of geek??)
Anyway, great review, I really must drag the BF to see this (he derides me for my Star Trek love, he is more of a Star Wars guy himself. I say, what's wrong with being both??)
I used to be vehemently anti Star Wars, because I was being narrow minded. I don't think there's anything at all wrong with liking both, since one is space fantasy and the other is science fiction.
This is in reference to the criticism in Ebert's article and what I've heard thrown around a few times. This is the perfect response. Thank you, The Onion.
I definitely agree with the whole Star Wars vibe, which I thought was kind of ironic considering the Star Trek Wars (and the Star Wars Trek...) and all. But especially during the Delta Vega scenes, I kept thinking stuff like "wrap yourself in a tauntaun for warmth!" and "OMG it's the ice monster, use the force!"
So I take it that Spock/Uhura isn't actually a thing, then? I was a little confused by that, like, existing.
Something else that just occurred to me: Pike came back in a wheelchair, just like Obi-wan came back as a force ghost. The parallels continue!
And yeah, Spock/Uhura is totally new. In TOS Nurse Chapel was always chasing Spock, but he never responded, let alone reciprocated. Well, except for that time he threw a bowl of soup at her. I'm currently blaming it on Spock being emotionally compromised.
No, there was not even the slightest whiff of a scent of a hint of Spock/Uhura in TOS. The only thing even remotely similar was, as I mentioned above, how Nurse Chapel was always chasing him, but that was purely one-sided.
I would not be surprised to learn, given my observations about plot path and grrliz's observations about visual style and recent history, that one or more of the development meetings for this movie was about how they could mimic the success of Star Wars.
