Emily's developed some pretty interesting musical tastes for an almost-twelve-year-old. Her father and I are both music nuts -- Emily attended her first concert before she was even born! And she's very into listening to her own CDs and mp3s these days. If she's in the car, she takes over the mp3 player and I just have to live with whatever she plays.
Usually I'm okay with that. Her tastes are eclectic, and so are mine, so there's not usually much conflict of interest. But recently, her father bought her the "Shrek the Third" soundtrack CD. And Emily's gone bananas over Fergie's cover of "Barracuda." I played the original version for Emily in the car, and she responded by shutting it off and playing Fergie's remake instead.
I fucking hate it. For one thing, the cover brings nothing new to the song -- apart from some nice session guitar work on the solo, it's a note-for-note reproduction. Also, since Fergie's not as competent a singer as Ann Wilson, the producers had to compensate by enhancing the vocals digitally. It's just fake and soulless and sad.
But Emily loves it, so I'll be hearing it for a long time.
Anybody got some earplugs?
