On Sunday Sept 24 2006 Canadian border security officials walked off the job near the B.C/ Washington border. Why? Because they had received a report that an armed and dangerous American fugitive was on his way to the border to try and sneak into Canada.
Seems our unarmed Canadian border guards were not interested in risking their lives to stop this guy. Go figure!
Of course that created huge delays for people coming into Canada. Traffic was at a dead stop for miles while management slowly let one or two lanes of traffic trickle through as they worked into the night getting people through the border. In the spirit of cross border cooperation, American officials kept the media up to date on the problem while sometimes laughing openly at the Canadian border guards reaction to the situation.
I’m still trying to figure out what was so damn funny. Perhaps it’s the irony that American border guards need to be armed to protect themselves from Canadians while Canadian border guards don’t have guns at all.
Of course, the amusement grows exponentially when one thinks about the vastly different gun control measures in place in each country. I feel a chuckle trying to escape.
Just think about it. All those brave, armed Americans protecting over 3,000 miles of border from a whopping thirty million Canadians for who gun ownership is a very controlled seriously regulated privilege. Hilarious!
Then there are the laughable, and unarmed, Canadians protecting that same border from a paltry three-hundred million Americans every one of whom is constitutionally guaranteed the right to bear arms. Why the tears of laughter are just a-rolling!
Silly Canadians! You should be on the job and ready to work (unarmed) just like your (armed) American counterparts. Just because they don’t have to deal with armed Canadians trying to cross the border in the same numbers as Americans coming north is no reason to balk. You should be proud and honoured to be given the privilege of providing a defense against armed Americans trying to sneak into Canada one step ahead of armed American pursuit.
After all, the goal is to prevent dangerous people like potential terrorists and suspiciously unarmed Canadians from getting into the United States.
Being concerned over what might be coming OUT of U.S. is just petty.
