the bare necessities

I think if there’s one thing plaguing our society right now it’s a need for “more”. Materialism, in all its forms, is our Achilles’ heel. We need the newest, best things right away, only to move on to something else just as quickly. We need the cutest, most fashionable clothes, we need to look the best, we need to have the nicest things, all for the sake of acceptance, and it’s all bullshit.

There was a time, not that long ago actually, when the majority of the world functioned one day at a time, providing themselves with what they needed to just gets through the day. Food, clothing, shelter, and that’s all. It was a simple time, but now as we enter a complex era, so do our needs. Why is it that we need to have the newest and best things? I think it’s for shameless self promotion. We need to be on top, and therefore so do our material goods.

Why can’t we return to that time when we didn’t worry so much about satisfying this need to feel powerful and great? Give me a studio apartment, food, and clothing, and I’m happy. On the contrary, a 15,000 sq. foot house isn’t enough for some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. I think what it all boils down to is that we’re not thankful for what we do have, and therefore we feel like we have to have everything because nothing is ever enough. But if it’s never enough, then we keep striving for more and better, but we’re never happy.

Status symbols are ridiculous. If we’re so fucking important, why the fuck do we need to tell people about it? I mean, who the fuck do we have to please anyways?
