Two Wild and Crazy Guys Richie definitely called Inez the next night and they talked for a good two hours. He found her engaging, beautiful and funny. They had a coffee date set up for the weekend.
Tinkering on his own motorcycle as he thought about Inez, Richie felt the wash of JD’s pre-immortal buzz. Grinning as he stood up to the chime of the front door’s bell, he headed to the front.
“JD! My man!” Richie crowed out, but the smile left his face as he took in the visibly upset JD. “JD?”
“I found out Casey has been cheating on me,” JD whispered. “When I went to go talk to her - to try to work things out, - there was another guy with her. She said she needed a boyfriend she didn’t have to worry about dying on her every time he went into work.”
“I’m sorry, JD,” Richie whispered as he led the younger man to a nearby chair.
“I really liked her, Zack,” JD breathed out as tears prickled his eyes. “Why did she do that?”
Kneeling down, Richie placed a hand of comfort on JD’s shoulder. “I have no idea, JD. She just didn’t deserve you. It's her loss."
JD started to cry and Richie gathered him in his arms and held the distraught young man. “Easy, JD, easy. It’ll be okay.”
JD nodded into Richie’s shirt.
“Are your friends back, yet?”
JD shook his head.
“How about you spend the day with me and help me out, okay?” Richie asked gently
“Okay,” JD whispered.
Richie spent the rest of the day showing JD the ropes in his shop and the younger man felt a bit happier at the end of the day.
Glancing up at Richie, JD nervously smiled. “Uh, Zack, my team is heading back to work tomorrow, so you might not see or hear from me for a couple of weeks.”
“No worries, JD,” Richie grinned. “As I understand it, you government types are pretty busy.”
Red-rimmed eyes crinkled in amusement. “Yeah, I’ll call you when I have some free time, Zack.”
“See ya later, JD!” Richie cried out to his friend, who smiled and waved goodbye as he exited the motorcycle shop.
********************
It was two weeks before JD showed up again. And the younger pre-immortal came into the shop while Richie was manning the till.
“JD! Holy shit! What the hell happened to you?” Richie cried out as he ran out from behind the front desk and took in his friend.
JD had his arm in a sling and was looking slightly purple and blue. There was also another guy with him, with blue eyes and slightly curly, longish dark hair.
Laughing slightly, embarrassed at the attention, JD told Richie what had happened. “Zigged when I should’ve zagged and one of the perp’s caught me in a hold and threw me against some crates. Ended up with some bruises, splinters and a dislocated shoulder.”
“Well, hopefully the splinters weren’t in an embarrassing spot,” Richie joked lightly.
The other man snorted lightly as JD shook his head. “Nah, they were mostly in my arm and shoulder from where I was thrown.”
Richie than pointed at the other guy. “So, who’s this?”
“Oh man! Totally my bad!” JD exclaimed and then pointed at his friend. “Vin, this is my friend Zackery Hall,” He then pointed to Richie. “Zack, this is my friend and teammate, Vin Tanner.”
Vin and Richie sized each other up as they shook hands. “Nice ta meet cha’, Zack.” Vin said.
“Likewise, Vin,” Richie stated and then turned to JD. “So what brings you by my humble shop today?”
“Well, like myself, Vin rides the occasional bike and when I told him there was a new bike shop, he had to come and see,” JD explained.
“Looks like yer doin’ fine for yerself here,” Vin said as he took in his surroundings.
“I make do,” Richie smiled.
“So, get anywhere with Inez yet?” JD asked impishly.
“We’ve had about three dates so far,” Richie smiled.
“You’re the new guy in Inez’s life?” Vin asked and then started to laugh. “Oh man! Bucklin has been going crazy trying to find out who the new guy seeing Inez.”
“Thought he was the only who could win Inez, huh?” Richie joked.
“Somthin’ like that.”
“Well, she isn’t an object to be won,” Richie said. “She’s her own person and can make decisions for herself. If your friend Buck had realized that, he probably would’ve been with her a lot sooner.”
JD and Vin looked at Richie and then at one another.
“Reckon yer right there, Zack,” Vin said. “Sometimes Buck just gets caught up in life.”
“He's definitely a force of nature,” JD stated. “But yeah, so, I brought you to the shop to show off my new friend, satisfied, Vin?”
Vin nodded. “Just wanted to make sure everythin’ was okay.”
“Over protective big brothers?” Richie loudly whispered to JD.
“You have no idea,” JD whispered back to Richie, equally loud.
“Hey! We’re not that bad!” Vin grinned.
“No, you’re ten times worse!” JD countered back.
Richie smiled as the banter continued between Vin and JD. It brought back happier memories of his time with Mac and Tessa and how they took in a street kid and gave him a chance at a better life.
“Zack?”
“Hmm?” Richie mumbled.
“Looked a little lost on the road of life there,” Vin commented.
“Oh, just remembering a friend,” Richie smiled. “How about I show you two the motorcycle I’m restoring?”
JD and Vin eagerly agreed.
~~~
Vin had left nearly an hour ago, but JD was still hanging around. Richie had promised Vin he would drive the younger man home when it was time to close up.
Richie had pulled one of the more comfy chairs from the front and placed it in the back for JD as he watched Richie work.
Tightening one of the screws, Richie glanced at JD and frowned. “JD?”
“Hmm?” JD asked.
“Do they teach you any kind of self-defence at this government building of yours?”
“They do, but it’s mostly basic self-defence,” JD explained. “A lot of the guys supplement the training they want on their own dime with Karate or Tae Kwan Do.”
“I see,” Richie breathed and then turned to JD. “How do you feel about learning some martial arts from me?”
“Huh?”
“Well, I have a couple of masteries in martial arts, JD and to say it bluntly, you look terrible,” Richie stated. “And I just want to help you out so you don't come walking in here looking like a walking bruise again.”
“I don’t know, Zack,” JD said hesitantly. “I mean…”
“I just want to help you out here, JD,” Richie said forcefully. “You’re my friend and I have these skills -.” He shrugged. “How about we try a couple of lessons and if you don’t like ‘em, you don’t have to continue, but if you do, we’ll keep going.”
JD really looked at his friend and could see the worry and concern on Richie’s face. Well, what could a couple of lessons hurt?
“All right, but only after I heal up,” JD agreed.
“Excellent!” Richie grinned. “And of course, we'll take it slow since you apparently bruise like a little girl"
“Hey!!” JD protested.
THE END.
