I have two ficlets to share with everyone! Huzzah! I hope you like them. :)
Kevin glanced around the ‘Black Cat Humane Society’, where other witches, like himself, were looking around, seeing if they could feel the pull to their familiar.
But he didn’t have much hope, this was his sixteenth year. His last chance to find a familiar or a familiar to find him. His brothers had already found their familiars and while Kevin was happy for his siblings, he ached to find his own.
Kevin wandered the familiar rooms, filled to the brim with books and cosy nooks with comfortable chairs, perfect for just relaxing in.
He headed over to the corner of an empty familiar room, to the spot he had claimed as his after the first year he didn’t bond. Sitting down in the comfortable chair, Kevin held up his hand, fingers splayed and waited patiently. A book floated down gently into his waiting hand.
Smiling to himself, Kevin settled in to read his favourite book as he let loose the confines he had on his magic. He just had to wait and his familiar would come to him. That’s what his mother always told him and his mother’s words were always true. Kevin squashed down the faint tendril of fear that it wouldn’t happen this year.
He just had to believe.
The hours slowly passed, the light gliding down the window signaling how much time was passing. Lights illuminated the room Kevin was in as he concentrated on his book.
So absorbed in his book, he didn’t even register the black shadow detach itself from an upper bookshelf. Books floated in front of the black shape as it delicately made its way down the makeshift stairs before settling itself on the back of the chair Kevin was sitting in.
Leaning over Kevin’s shoulder, it glanced at the page and then wrinkled it’s nose. “How can you read that crap?”
“AUGH!”
The book went flying forward as Kevin scrambled out of the seat. He managed to turn around, hand out and spell on his lips.
A paw swiped forward, cancelling Kevin’s spell. “None of that, witchling.”
Kevin blinked and lowered his hand. “Um, sorry?”
“Are you asking or telling.”
Kevin sat up a bit, clearing his throat. “Telling. Sorry about that, Familiar.”
The black cat jumped down onto the cushion of the chair and settled, paws kneeding the fabric as it eyed Kevin. “Apology accepted. Now, what are you doing in here?”
“I was reading, hoping for a Familiar to come and choose me,” Kevin admitted, hands nervously twisting the fabric of his sweater.
The cat snorted, whiskers twitching. “You wanted us to do all the work? You didn’t want to be like the others and go badger the others into choosing you?”
Kevin shook his head. “Mother always said it was best to let the Familiar come and choose you. You just had to stretch your magic out and if the Familiar liked it, they would come to you and ask.”
“Hmm, your Mother, she follows the old ways?” the cat asked.
“Yes.”
“And do you?”
“I try to,” Kevin admitted. “It’s hard and I’m not sure of what I’m doing, but I try.”
“Hmm.”
Kevin bit his lip, wondering if this was it. “Is this an interview?”
“Maybe, your magic did call to me and it’s the nicest magic I’ve felt since my last Witch,” the Familiar said as it jumped off the chair and padded forward. “But I’m not sure, you seem flighty.”
Kevin kept silent as the Familiar circled around him, before jumping onto his shoulder. His body dipped a little at the weight, but Kevin kept as still as possible, letting the Familiar continue it’s inspection of him.
The black cat jumped down and looked at Kevin. It was a few minutes before it gave a tiny bob. “I’ve decided, we’ll do a trial run.”
Kevin’s eyes widened. “A trial run?” He had never heard anything like that before.
“Yes, a trial run,” the Familiar decided and Kevin then gasped as the Familiar’s magic wrapped around him and he felt emotions that weren’t his own weave their way into his head. The emotions felt old.
“You feel so old,” Kevin whispered. How long had this Familiar been without a Witch? And how long had this Familiar been with their previous Witch.
The Familiar chuckled. “I am old. Very old. My last Witch was Witch Beckett.”
Kevin gasped. “That was over a hundred years ago!”
“Mmm, I’ve been a Familiar to the Decaydance coven for a long time. You can call me Mike.”
Extending his hand, Kevin let Mike sniff it before a furred cheek rubbed against the fingers and Kevin smiled before picking Mike up and scratching under the black cat’s chin. A purring sound filled the room.
Kevin slowly stood up, keeping hold of his Familiar. His Familiar. He was finally a proper witch with a proper cat. Ha! Take that brothers, can’t mock him now.
A head rubbed under his chin. “You’re going to do the inner monologue thing a lot, aren’t you?”
Kevin gaped. “You could hear that?”
“We’re bonded, even if it’s a trial run. I can hear every thought of yours,” Mike said. “With practice, you’ll hear mine.”
Beaming, Kevin scritched between Mike’s ears. “I can’t wait.”
THE END.
This ficlet is based on this prompt
here “Look! Dobby is a free elf!”
Mike grunted as their puppy Max was shoved into his face, dressed in a towel with a sock attached to the side. “Why are you dressing up our fur baby?”
“Halloween,” Kevin said as he cradled Max to his chest. “We don’t have a kid, so stupid costumes for the dog instead.” He grinned and scritched behind Max’s ears.
Max’s leg kicked out as Kevin’s fingers found the sweet spot.
Mike sighed and joined in the scritching. “He does look a little bit like, Dobby.”
Kevin grinned as they petted their puppy. “It’s all in this adorable face.”
Max was giving a doggy grin, tongue hanging out as he was loved.
“Any other ideas?”
“I was thinking a spider costume,” Kevin said as he set Max down on the ground, Max circled around their ankles.
Mike shuddered. “No, no spider costumes. I am drawing the line at that.”
Kevin grinned. “Is someone freaked out by spiders?”
“You know fucking well I am,” Mike growled, glaring at Kevin.
“Oh, that’s right, you had me come and kill a spider with a shoe for you,” Kevin added and giggled a little as Max sat down and his tail wagging kept hitting his feet.
Mike pointed at Kevin. “You are a mean thing.”
Kevin just grinned and leaned forward, pecking a kiss on Mike’s cheek. “And that’s why you love me.”
Mike sniffed and bent down, picking up Max. “I love our fur baby more.”
“Lies,” Kevin said waving a hand at Mike. “You love us equally.”
Mike made a dismissive noise and dropped a kiss on top of Max’s head. “Fur baby.”
Kevin gently took Max from Mike’s hands and set the dog down on the ground. “Me.”
“Fur baby,” Mike insisted, stepping into Kevin’s space.
Kevin shifted forward, going on his tip toes and pressed a kiss to Mike’s lips. “Me.”
Mike sighed and kissed Kevin back. “I guess I love you.”
“Because I kill spiders for you,” Kevin said with a grin.
“Because you kill spiders for me,” Mike said with a chuckle.
“I can also think of other things I could be doing to show my love for you,” Kevin said with a smirk, tugging at Mike’s belt.
“Oh?” Mike asked with a grin.
Kevin just wiggled his eyes brows and tugged Mike towards their room.
THE END.
