I think I've realised one of the key reasons I miss being in a relationship beyond the obvious companionship element. I think I just like doing nice things for people for no reason and no obligation. I mean, sure I could do that for friends and on occassion I do, but I kind of feel like people often think "Why are you doing this for me?" or "What favour are you looking to get out of this?."
In a relationship, spontaneous niceness is just part of the fun. you can surprise your significant other with something simple like flowers or a gift they've been eyeing up for a while, or something more personal that relates to a special moment you shared or an in-joke.
I like the latter kind the best, it just gives a me a great lift to see someone enjoy something that is special to both of us and only us. Anyone else might wonder why, but to you it's something of great significance. One of my favourite things I ever did with my first girlfriend was buying her a set of chopsticks that related to our first date.
It was something small but fun and was a reminder of a shared moment between the two of us and that's the kind of thing I miss. Those intimate moments of nothings and somethings that make all the difference.
