Have you ever noticed that watching something you find REALLY funny, with someone who only finds it a little funny, or not at all, always sours the experience for you and leads you to find it less funny?
For one thing you find yourself toning down your reactions, even stifling laughs to avoid looking foolish or prevent not conforming. Even later when you watch it alone you find their lack of reaction has affected how you watch the film or tv show yourself. It's for this reason that I am always loathe to watch comedy films with people unless I know they are things I know they'll laugh at too. I recently made the mistake of introducing my parents to "The Big Bang Theory," since we enjoy watching sitcoms together. However, I almost instantly realised how much of a mistake this was when a number of geek-heavy reference jokes popped up, and general dorky behavour which I found hilarious, fell relatively flat with my parents. This went to the extreme that I was practically embarassed to be watching with them. Perhaps a case of too close to home maybe?
Either way tonight I intend to make this point and say I will no longer watch it with them, since it reduces my own enjoyment of the show. This growing realisation has made me even more reticent to watch Ouran with...well, anyone, especially since it's a series that I've grown so close to, and it has a unique brand of humour that only I seem to fully appreciate. That said, I've sent my friend Sophie clips of it, and upon saying I had the DVDs she was very keen to watch it. Unusual since she's not really an animé fan. I'll see what happens with that one. I might just lend her the DVDs for the first half and if she likes it I'll watch the second half with her. This seems a safer bet since the first half is funnier, and thus any toning down of the second half will be lessened slightly.
Anyways, that's enough of my comchannat esque rant.
