Another Lost Love

I wonder if anyone here at LJ remembers The Lonely Doll? Maybe it was the echo of Edith and the Bears that caught at my heart the first time I saw Volks dolls photographed so beautifully by Kallisti?

Like most of us who still remember the book, I remember the exact time and place of my own encounter with it. I was in First Grade, and my teacher felt I was ready to start checking out books from the school library "general collection" ahead of my peers. She sent me to the librarian, who pulled out a book at random and asked me to read from it to her. It was one of the Lonely Doll series, and from then on, I had to read every single Dare Wright book the library owned. (I also still remember that one word gave me trouble. It was "trough." I did not know how to pronounce it. I have a feeling that one word will be the clue to finding again the actual book that started my love for The Lonely Doll.)

Only a couple of these marvellous books are still in print, along with a disturbing-sounding biography of Ms. Wright herself.

For more information, follow the link to the Dare Wright Official Web Site. There are many spooky/beautiful photographs of the author there.
