Romeo and Juliet- Dire Straits
A lovestruck Romeo sings a streetsus serenade
Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it?
I know this song. It was in this movie we have at the store, well actually two movies. Empire Records, and Can’t Hardly Wait. Both of the movies are those 1990s teenager movies with hardly any plot and lots of characters to keep track of. One is about a group of teenagers working at an independent music store that’s about to be sold to a franchise, and one teen’s attempt to win enough money to buy the store, but ends up losing it all gambling. The other takes place at a graduation party, with about a thousand subplots going on, one for each character. But the plot that both movies have in common is a boy trying to pluck up enough courage to tell the girl he’s doted on for years that he loves her. And this song plays for both of the characters. If I remember correctly, they both play right after the boy tells her for the first time, but she doesn’t quite understand and rejects him
I don’t quite get that, because when you think about Romeo and Juliet, when he first told Juliet that he loved her, she returned it. There was no question. Even though they’d only known each other for a few hours. But I guess a lot can happen in a few hours that can bring two people together.
This song is a little different. It even says, “When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong Juliet?” Though that could mean when they fell in love, since she was about to marry Paris. But I bet that line is why those movies wanted to use that song. Since each boy told their girl at a bad time, and she freaked out.
But you don’t get the girl’s point of view in those movies. You see enough so that you understand where she’s coming from, but she never gets a chance to explain herself before he’s off and moping somewhere, this song playing tragically in the background. Sometimes a girl just needs closure on something else first. Close one chapter in her life before beginning a new one. I know that feeling.
Larry and I watched Can’t Hardly Wait together once, and I remember feeling like he was getting antsy at the part where the boy told the girl how he really felt. And I just wanted to tell him “The time is wrong”. I liked Larry, how could I not? The man saved my life. Within the span of a few hours we’d grown to trust and depend on each other. Maybe love each other. I don’t really know how you couldn’t, after something like that. But the timing was off. I needed to close that chapter in my life, the one with statue aliens and time traveling Doctors, before I could begin a normal life with something like love in it. I don’t know that he ever understood that. But lucky for me he was patient.
I don’t mean to spoil the end of those movies, but the boy gets the girl in the end. I think we all know that’s going to happen. That’s why we watch movies like that. Happy ending guaranteed. Regular life doesn’t come with those guarantees, but sometimes we’re lucky enough to get it anyway.
