So I've been playing a lot of the Sims (shhh it's break don't judge me) and my family has two boys. When the first was born I happened to be texting my (Supernatural-obsessed) bestie, so at her behest I named him Dean. When it came time for Baby 2 to be named, I got cheeky and called him Sam.

Gratuitous Marlowe aside, I played the Sims 1 and 2 for PC and now have the Sims 3 for my Mac. They sell Mac/PC compatible versions just about everywhere (I didn't know that either until summer before last when I bought the same)! :) It's awesome so long as you keep everything updated (and gets hellllla glitchy otherwise). I recommend the Generations expansion pack because it adds a lot of awesome interactions to the game--the only other one I have is Pets (shh I'm poor).
Also, never model your family on the Winchesters if you want them to prosper?

I adored the Sims 2, and the Sims 3 is a very intuitive step forward from TS2, so I'm not really sure how it would go, transitioning straight from 1 to 3. I will say gameplay in TS3, if your computer is up to it (my graphics settings are reasonably low to accommodate but the game still looks awesome!), is a lot of fun. It smooths a lot of TS2's edges and makes the whole generation-building thing a lot of fun. The continuous-community thing (unlike in TS1 and 2, the households you're not controlling remain active) sounded really stressful to me at first, but it's actually really cool.
ETA: Sims 3 expansion packs are also almost half the cost of Sims 2 expansion packs, which is lovely.
